IAB's false positives on cy-wiki

IAB has incorrectly changed perfectly good references to an archive link eg here and wrongly says the link was 'dead'. So I've banned the IAB until a good reason is given for these edits. Thanks. Llywelyn2000 (talk) 04:38, 2 January 2022 (UTC)

@Llywelyn2000: It looks like the site is interacting strangely with the bot. While a normal web browser can load the content fine, all requests from the bot are getting directed to an error page delivering a 404 Not Found error. This has caused the bot to think that the page legitimately doesn't exist. To correct this, the domain has been marked a paermalive so the bot no longer reports them as dead. —CYBERPOWER (Chat) 20:03, 5 January 2022 (UTC)
Many thanks. Can you give me links to these please. We need to know why this happened. How and by who was the erroneous redirect created. Llywelyn2000 (talk) 06:38, 6 January 2022 (UTC)
@Llywelyn2000: Those are questions you will likely not be able to answer. The only thing I can tell you, is that when the bot tries to call it gets a 302 response (a redirect) and is sent to which is a 404 (Not found) error. Understandably, this is why the bot thought it was dead. As to why the bot gets sent there when web browsers don't, is a big mystery. —CYBERPOWER (Chat) 13:50, 6 January 2022 (UTC)

Many thanks, once again. Until this (and numerous other errors eg residue) are ironed out, the bot will remain banned from cywiki, as per community request. Llywelyn2000 (talk) 09:04, 7 January 2022 (UTC)

enwiki – AbuseFilter blocks single-page run to add archive links

I'm trying to analyze en:Gigi Ibrahim and add archive links where possible to prevent future link rot. When I try, the IAbot interface shows a red error banner that reads "Analysis error: abusefilter-disallowed: ⧼abusefilter-warning-proxy-link⧽". Please advise! (Please ping in response) Ezlev (talk) 23:31, 6 January 2022 (UTC)

Ezlev, can you try running the tool on the Gigi Ibrahim article again? Harej (talk) 19:58, 12 January 2022 (UTC)
Same issue, Harej, after a 107-second run (longer than it was when I initially tried, I think). Ezlev (talk) 20:23, 12 January 2022 (UTC)
Ezlev, Cyberpower678 ran the bot on the article. The bot ran into conflicts with AbuseFilter involving the use of EBSCO links. Administrators can bypass this filter, so he ran the bot on that page. Harej (talk) 19:37, 19 January 2022 (UTC)

Error permission

Hi, I've been using the bot smoothly for months, but now when I was trying to run it, it gave me "error permission" notice. I'll be grateful if anyone can help me out. (And please ping me when replying) --Yolo4A4Lo (talk) 08:54, 12 January 2022 (UTC)

Yolo4A4Lo, can you confirm in the tool interface that "English Wikipedia" is selected in the dropdown box on the top right? Harej (talk) 19:51, 12 January 2022 (UTC)
Thank you, it works again now. By chance, I'm trying to run the bot on en:Yuzuru Hanyu and have submitted it as a job, but the bot didn't archive any links despite it said the work has been done. I've never run it on article this big, so I'll appreciate your help. -- Yolo4A4Lo (talk) 00:33, 13 January 2022 (UTC)
Yolo4A4Lo, that article has too many links on it, so the bot is unable to process the article through the single-page analysis tool. Further, batch jobs have no configuration options for security reasons, which is why the bot is not working in the preferred way. Harej (talk) 19:42, 19 January 2022 (UTC)

Japanese wikipedia

Hi! The bot is now running on Danish Wikipedia and it seems to be working good there so I thought perhaps it could also be restarted on Japanese Wikipedia. So I asked the admin that blocked the bot and the reply was that if you "start working on fixing the issues again then I can consider". So my question is if any of you have time to work on it again? If yes I think the bot should start out slow and with a few edits so there is time to check the edits. Sadly I do not speak Japanese but I'm working with the blocking admin on moving files to Commons so I think it is possible to get some help translate. If you do not have time at the moment that is no problem. I'm sure Japanese Wikipedia can wait a few months more :-) --MGA73 (talk) 11:37, 22 January 2022 (UTC)

MGA73, there were two issues that have prevented the bot from running on Japanese Wikipedia. The first issue had to do with respecting very strict rate limits; this has been resolved. The next issue is that there is an unusually high number of dead URL false positives due to access restrictions of Japanese websites, and it will take more work to get around this. Wrong version

In edits like this the bot adds a archive link to the 2014 year edition of NGA List of Lights, Radio Aids and Fog Signals (Q13872896) when the source used is the 2017 year edition. In most cases a lighthouse that existed in 2017 probably existed in 2014 too, but the page numbers are wrong. /Esquilo (talk) 11:56, 16 January 2022 (UTC)

Esquilo, thank you for your report. Unfortunately you have encountered an edge case in how the bot stores information about archive links, and this will not be fixed for some time. In the meantime, you can use the Manage Single URL interface to manually configure an archive URL. Harej (talk) 19:53, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
Thank you for your answer. I'd love to enter manual configurations for this URL, but unfortunately I do not have the permissions.
The action you are trying to perform requires the changeurldata permission.
This permission is obtainable with the following groups: user, admin, root, bot

Pollution by Bots

Can WP be changed so Bots do not pollute the discussion pages the way they do? It’s horrible. The discussion pages are filled up with automated verbage by Bots rather than discussion by editors. It is completely out of control. I wonder if my note here will generate more automated pollution by a Bot? Some years ago, it wasn’t like this. Back then discussion pages were for discussion. Now one struggles to spot the discussion amidst the Bot pollution. Frenchmalawi (talk) 03:28, 27 January 2022 (UTC)

dawiki questions

(moved from en:User talk:Cyberpower678)

Hi! According to this bot queue for this wiki is disabled. Is it globally or did someone disable it for dawiki? Also I would like to hear if bot tries to save urls to if the url is not yes archived? --MGA73 (talk) 13:44, 16 January 2022 (UTC)

Perhaps you could also help me with this question: Dawiki uses da:Template:Dødt link and it is the same as {{Dead link}}. But in edits like da:Special:Diff/10600392 it seems that the bot does not know its the same template (also it removed the url). I do not know if its a but or us setting up the config wrong. --MGA73 (talk) 16:50, 18 January 2022 (UTC)
Hello again. This is dead but it is whitelisted so I can't change it. --MGA73 (talk) 17:45, 18 January 2022 (UTC)

I have updated the configuration for the Dødt link. It was slightly misconfigured. As set the URL to dead. —CYBERPOWER (Chat) 20:05, 19 January 2022 (UTC)

Thank you very much User:Cyberpower678. Perhaps you can tell me

  1. if bot queue can be enabled again for dawiki?
  2. if bot tries to save urls to if the url is not yes archived?

--MGA73 (talk) 11:25, 20 January 2022 (UTC)

MGA73, the bot queue is disabled because a rate limit was configured for Danish Wikipedia, and when a rate limit is set, this disables the queue so that users do not cause the bot to make more edits than it should. To enable the bot queue, you should set the rate limit to 0. This will not make the bot edit too quickly as it runs pretty slowly by default. Harej (talk) 19:21, 2 February 2022 (UTC)
Thank you Harej. That makes sense. Do you know if bot will ask to save urls if they are not allready archived? --MGA73 (talk) 20:59, 2 February 2022 (UTC)
MGA73, since we are making archives of all external links, on all wikis, as they are posted, we do not specifically submit links to the Wayback Machine on-demand. Harej (talk) 18:57, 16 February 2022 (UTC)

This diff was first reported by MGA73 at my enwiki talk page. It added |url-status=dead but should have left a {{dead link}} or an archive URL. I don't know if this is a bug, template or site cfg problem. It sometimes works as seen here. -- GreenC (talk) 15:08, 13 February 2022 (UTC)

SqWiki - Problems

  1. Please take a look at this article, the references. The bot is acting really strange on it for a while now.
  2. After IABot had its global manic episode, the number of articles in this category (CS1 - Extra parameters) jumped from some tens to 3000. Now that the bot is fixed, can it be programmed to remove the parameters it added in error? Bots (Bot operators) are usually supposed to clean up the damages in these cases. We'd prefer keeping the hyphenated versions. - Klein Muçi (talk) 02:47, 12 February 2022 (UTC)
@Klein Muçi: For the first instance, I have a working theory of what is triggering this bug and made an edit that should work around it. The bug appears to be triggered by using protocol relative URLs. I have changed them to protocol specific URLs. If you don't mind approving the revision. As for the second case, I will work on getting the references cleaned up. Please allow a few weeks for this to happen. —CYBERPOWER (Chat) 19:20, 16 February 2022 (UTC)

Live links not stored in

I was told that the bot does not ask to save a website so I guess users have to save them manually. The tricky part is to find those links. Is there any way to make a list/dump of links to live pages not yet stored in

I can imagine that it would be more than a few links so we could use an easy way to save the links to The trick is that there may be links leading to spam, porn, junk etc. So I was thinking that users have to click the link and if it is relevant then they clik save and if it is spam they should remove it from Wikipedia. Can you think of an easy way save good links or do we have to go to and paste the link manually? --MGA73 (talk) 09:09, 19 February 2022 (UTC)

MGA73, the reason the bot does not ask because the Wayback Machine, on its own initiative, is already archiving all links posted to wiki. If there is an urgent need to archive a website I recommend submitting a bulk request through the Google Sheets upload. Harej (talk) 19:31, 23 February 2022 (UTC)
Harej Thanks a lot! That sounds very good. The problem is to find pages not yet archived. But if Wayback Machine is already archiving links it should not be many links and/or only very recent links. --MGA73 (talk) 15:18, 24 February 2022 (UTC)

Why whitelist

Links like is dead but it is whitelisted so I can't change it. Is it because the bot can't access or what is the reason for the whitelist? Unless bot won't work correct I think we should remove the whitelist. If whitelist can't be removed and we need to fix all pages manually perhaps you could change my userrights so I can fix it? --MGA73 (talk) 18:42, 20 February 2022 (UTC)

German Wikipedia

I am aware that the Bot is currently disabled for de:WP (which is very, very sad). The user page (de:Benutzer:InternetArchiveBot) says it's possible to run it manually, which I tried yesterday. But so far, 24 hrs later, my bot job (ID 9565) has not been executed. Is that because the bot's busy or is that because the information was wrong and not even a manual run works? Thanks and kind regards, Grueslayer (talk) 15:15, 25 February 2022 (UTC)

Not a developer but someone whos paying attention to the situation.. there is severe backlogs right now. You are better off just doing all the tasks manually as there, as of current, is a 40 job backlog. NeoJade (talk) 18:44, 25 February 2022 (UTC)
But that's actually good news for me, as it indicates the bot job will eventually run, and I'm not exactly in a hurry. Any idea about how long a backlog of 40 jobs takes the bot? Kind regards, Grueslayer (talk) 19:10, 25 February 2022 (UTC)

Pre-emptively archive large pages

Hello! So I just attempted to run the bot on Nintendo Switch and it told me it was too large and to instead submit a job. However, I'm running the bot to archive all the links pre-emptively so that if they do go dead there will be an archive. Is there any way to pre-emptively archive links on large pages such as Nintendo Switch? ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 03:01, 8 March 2022 (UTC)

While the safeties in the bot prevent operation on large pages, what you can do is split the page in half, run the split pages on your sandbox, and then later combine the split text back into one page. This is due to the limitations imposed by the infrastructure the bot tools run on. —CYBERPOWER (Chat) 19:07, 9 March 2022 (UTC)

Cite error

If a reference has a refname, and has all reference details maintained at each use of the refname, then InternetArchiveBot causes a cite error by only adding archive details to the first instance. Sorry that a terrible way to explain it.
This edit and this one might make it clearer. In the first edit the refname Censo2014 is used twice, but the bot only adds details to the first instance. Before the edit both instances matched and so didn't generate a cite error, but by changing only one they no longer match and generate a cite error. The second edit is just another example of the same. Is there anything that can be done about this? I'm guessing it's outside the scope of the bot. This bot used to work fine for me, and I've used it in the past with great success. However, in the past few months I've noticed that, no matter what I do, the pages I attempt to analyze with the bot take a very long time to resolve. When the bot finally does resolve, I'm greeted with a wide red banner saying "Analysis error: blocked: You have been blocked from editing." Russian Wikipedia links

Hi, thanks a lot for archiving links in articles in {{cite web}} templates, but please stop archiving working urls in 'Ссылки' (Links) section! Your bot uses incorrect formatting, for example the link is: * [ Profile of football player] at{{ref-en}} and your bot modifies it as * [ Profile of football player]{{Wayback| |date=20210604174049 }} at{{ref-en}}. We got 'Profile of football player Archive copy... Wayback machine... on website'. It is not readable, it breaks the order of words in a sentence and also there is no need to archive working urls in Links section. For example [5] Corwin of Amber (talk) 03:56, 31 March 2022 (UTC)

Also have a lot of examples in articles i edit. It's not only in russian version. In azeri version is the same.

Ukrainian Wikipedia manually formatted citations

Hello. Thank you for the Internet Archive Bot! It works great in most cases. However, I have a concern which is similar to the Russian Wikipedia links discussion above. In some cases, the template which is inserted by the bot does not make sense because it is inserted in the middle of a citation which is manually formatted in plain wiki markup without resorting to a citation template. For example, the citation may be: The Order of the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine "On Approval of Composition of Public Council under Ministry of Justice of Ukraine" dated 4 February 2009 No. 184/5. If the name of the document is linked, the bot would insert the template before the words dated 4 February 2009 No. 184/5 resulting in an incoherent citation. Some citations follow local citation rules which does not expect a link to the Internet Archive right after the title of the cited source. Sometimes, the link to the Internet Archive may be even already present right after such manually formatted citation, so we get duplicate links to the Internet Archive: one provided by the authors and another provided by the bot. I could remove or move the template which was inserted by the bot, but it will probably re-insert it on its next run. One of the possible remedies to that could be moving the URL outside the citation, so that to allow the bot to add a template after the citation without interfering with it. But that would be against common Wikipedia citation guidelines. What might be the recommended approach to this? Can I somehow protect the citation by showing the Internet Archive bot a place where it can insert its template safely (which is typically after the citation)?--Роман Рябенко (talk) 13:09, 1 April 2022 (UTC)

You should be able to safely move the templates to the correct spot, without the bot re-adding the template to it's default spot. With that being said, I can have the bot confine it's operations to only references. What would you like to proceed with? —CYBERPOWER (Chat) 08:41, 13 April 2022 (UTC)
Роман Рябенко, making sure you have seen this. Harej (talk) 18:47, 28 April 2022 (UTC)
Thank you for pinning me. I missed this somehow.
I was writing under an assumption that the bot is looking for a URL and inserts its template right next to the link. So, if I move the template to a different place in the footnote, I expected the bot to re-insert the template in the same spot. If my assumption was wrong, I should be able to fix this by hand where necessary. It would probably be nice to add it to the FAQ.
The bot had being working for some time and I know only one more contributor to Ukrainian-language Wikipedia who was confused about the same issue. Let's continue with the bot running. Роман Рябенко (talk) 16:50, 29 April 2022 (UTC)

Has there been any kind of solution to clean up the redundancy IA Bot caused some months ago globally? This category for us used to have around 10 times less entries before that episode happened. Wishlist item: avoid causing named reference multiple cite errors

As seen in this diff, when run on pages containing named references that are defined multiple times with identical content, IAbot only adds an archive link to the first appearance of each particular reference. This provokes angry bold red errors e.g. "Cite error: The named reference ":0" was defined multiple times with different content (see the help page)." My workaround is to manually deduplicate the reference content, replacing later appearances with <ref name="foo" />. It would be nice, however, if IAbot by itself simply copied the same change to all duplicates, or ran some sort of reference content deduplication as seen in AutoWikiBrowser. I apologize if this would be difficult to implement; I just think it would be a nice feature to have. – Anon423 (talk) 06:29, 4 May 2022 (UTC)

Harej Please take a look, with this edit] I remove the links posted by InternetArchiveBot because they were archived in 2009 or 2010 for a tournament played in 2014. And with my edit I replace them with correct links. --Carlo58s (talk) 18:50, 4 May 2022 (UTC)
@Carlo58s: I'm sorry, but, unfortunately, IABot has a limitation where it can only handle one snapshot of a URL, and one access time of a URL. If the access times of these URLs are updated to 2014 and subsequent snapshots are updated in the bot's DB, then the older snapshots will be removed. Addressing this requires a complete restructure of how the bot models its data internally. This is something that IABot 3 will seek to address down the road. —CYBERPOWER (Chat) 18:30, 11 May 2022 (UTC)

Bot stalled (choking on job 9878?)

Batch job #9878 appears to have some sort of problem. It's currently listed as "Running", and the list of articles in the batch has just one entry; however, the progress bar, weirdly, shows it as having completed running on 2/1 articles (corresponding to what appears to be listed as a progress percentage of 200%, although this is mostly cut off by the right end of the progress bar). The progress bar is also red (indicating a stalled job).

Possibly coincidentally, or possibly not, the last batch job listed as completed is job #9872, which finished just a couple hours shy of twelve days ago. Of the five batch jobs currently listed as running (#9873, #9874, #9875, #9877, and the aforementioned #9878), only #9878 shows any work done (the anomalous results described in the first paragraph); #9873, #9874, #9875, and #9877 all appear to be stuck at straight zeros for pages modified and links analyzed/rescued/tagged. All five of these jobs have been in the pipeline since 6-7 April.

Could someone please take a look at this problem, figure out what's gone wrong, and unjam the bot? Whoop whoop pull up Bitching Betty ⚧️ Averted crashes 18:04, 17 April 2022 (UTC)

My second question is, the list that of article that I created has only 1 article. I have seen users like Abductive and BrownHairedGirl work on these for long periods of time. They don't get their bot job stuck. Then why did my 1 article job work get hanged? Itcouldbepossible (talk) 13:21, 24 April 2022 (UTC)

I'm not sure why it got stuck, but at a guess it might be due to the sheer size of the individual article and number of refs, which might have caused some sort of overflow? I don't think that you actually did anything that might have resulted in this little incident, besides being the unlucky one to discover the bug. I'd suggest leaving this open, as this is probably going to need some investigation on why the bot had a brain fart. Mako001 (talk) 15:14, 24 April 2022 (UTC)

There are 112 articles with the |død-lenke=no" == DeadURL or "nei error e.g. 2021-06-07 (v2.0.8) and 2022-05-15 (v2.0.8.7). In addition, there are also 112 articles with duplicate archive links. They seem to be dated from 2022-03-31 to 2020-04-16 (v2.0.8.7 from 2022-04-06). - 4ing (talk) 21:20, 18 May 2022 (UTC)
I've now deleted the two errors in the affected articles. - 4ing (talk) 21:09, 19 May 2022 (UTC)

@MGA73: The |død-lenke=no" == DeadURL or "nei error is persistent, with 5 new occurences since May 19. - 4ing (talk) 10:32, 22 May 2022 (UTC)
@4ing: We had the same problem on dawiki but when we changed da:Modul:Citation/CS1 that problem was solved. So I think it is a problem in the module and not with the bot. We can perhaps discuss on nowiki? --MGA73 (talk) 10:46, 22 May 2022 (UTC)

The bot wrongly claims a link is dead

Hi, I'm shown a permission error, but I wanted to report that this bot wrongfully reported a dead link in [change] and [change]. Jero~nlwiki (talk) 07:19, 30 May 2022 (UTC)

Listing non-archived links

Is there a possibility to exclude non-archivable links from being continously "saved" by the bot?

There are several websites that, even though technically have their webpages archived by Internet Archive, just create an archived blank or error page. Here, for example, the bot archives a webpage from, while all the pages from this website are saved by WayBack Machine as blank (I do not have a sufficient technical expertise to understand the exact reason, I think it happens due to the fact that the website runs some sort of protection initially opening its pages as blank pages and uploading the contect only following a refresh).

Another example is website upolading historic newspapers, WayBack Machine does not manage to archive those pages, maybe because of the script used by the page, it just indexes the pages with error notification, and the bot "saves" those error pages. However, the bot still comes to "save" those links only to provide an archived error page.

Reverting bot's "saves" in such cases does not prevent the bot from returning to the article to "save" the non-archived links yet again. It is not about a specific page, it is about either adjusting the way WayBack Machine approaches these sites (in order to prevent wasting resources on indexing unarchivable pages) or creating a list of web resources the bot will not aim to "save".

Thanks and keep up your (generally) good work. -- Prokurator11 (talk) 08:07, 9 June 2022 (UTC)

Prokurator11, unfortunately, these kinds of false archives are hard to detect. In individual instances you can add {{cbignore}} immediately after the URL and the bot will ignore it. Harej (talk) 18:33, 29 June 2022 (UTC)

Links with no title have "|title=Архивированная копия". Maybe it's possible to insert real page's title? If not, I think will be better e.g. "|title=Источник" Jaguar K (talk) 15:25, 5 July 2022 (UTC)

Jaguar K, at this time, it is not possible for the bot to directly pull the page title. If I can ask, is there a reason why "Источник" is better? I am not sure that would be clearer. Harej (talk) 18:31, 6 July 2022 (UTC)

Bot attempting to rescue a dead URL using a broken archive

Sometimes, Wayback Machine records as page as having been archived, but fails to actually capture all of the content of the page. On en:List of Virtual Console games for Nintendo 3DS (North America), there is a citation to a page on that used to list all of the Virtual Console games. This particular page has many recorded archives in Wayback Machine, but they don't actually include the page content. Unfortunately, the page no longer includes the content that was the basis of the citation, and it is permanently dead. This bot tries to rescue the dead link using Wayback Machine, despite that page not having the claimed content. Is there any way to tag this URL as un-rescueable? SnorlaxMonster (talk) 06:50, 16 July 2022 (UTC)

@SnorlaxMonster: you can use this tool to manipulate the information the bot uses to make that determination. There you can change the archive URL with a usable archive, or remove it entirely, prompting the bot to mark it un-rescueable. —CYBERPOWER (Chat) 07:32, 22 July 2022 (UTC)

Cyrillization of archivedate in uk-wiki

An example ("archivedate=2022-04-09" turns into "archivedate=9 квітня 2022"). Such changes are harmful. They do not affect visible text (Cite web template automatically shows 2022-04-09 as 9 квітня 2022), but make the code non-machine-readable (which, for example, impedes transferring of references to other language versions). Recently IABot started to use the value "unfit" for the url-status parameter on nlwiki (named 'dodeurl' locally), but the citation templates have not been adapted for this change, causing dead links to be shown instead of archived ones. Was there an announcement to the community about this change? If so, when and where? If not, please don't use "unfit" until we got the chance to adapt our templates. Also, where are the possible url-status values documented? bdijkstra (talk) 12:51, 8 August 2022 (UTC)

@Bdijkstra: Please have a look at nl:Module:Citation/CS1/Configuration which, according to it, supports that value. It's supposed tell the template to hide the original URL and only render the archive URL to the readers. If it's not doing that, you will need to fix the module to support that value, or remove the value, as well as "usurped" and "bot: unknown" from the configuration to keep the bot from using them. The bot adapts it's behavior based on what's present in the module configuration. —CYBERPOWER (Chat) 14:10, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
The Dutch implementation isn't based on Module:Citation, but fixed them anyway. Mbch331 (talk) 14:24, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
Where is it documented what these values mean? bdijkstra (talk) 14:57, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
@Bdijkstra: Please see en:Template:Cite_web#URL since the module was imported from enwiki. —CYBERPOWER (Chat) 15:00, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
I'm sorry, I should have asked my question more clearly, I meant to ask it in the context of the behaviour of IABot. In other words: does IABot distinguish between 'dead', 'usurped for the purposes of spam or advertising' and 'otherwise unsuitable'? bdijkstra (talk) 15:52, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
@Bdijkstra: Since they are functionally different, the answer is yes. Keywords like 'dead', 'yes', 'y', 'true', 'ja' are treated as a dead, while keywords like 'live','no','n',etc... treats the original URL as alive. Keywords like 'unfit', 'usurped', 'bot: unknown' treats the original URL with uncertainty, but assumed dead. It also tells the bot the original URL is hidden from view and should remain that way. Does this help? —CYBERPOWER (Chat) 18:29, 10 August 2022 (UTC)
Not really. I'm (still) talking about IABot writing template parameters to a page. I'd like to know how it chooses a value like 'dead' or 'unfit'. I understand it picks them from the CS1 module, but how does it decide the meaning of the options (what if we add a Dutch translation of 'unfit') and why it suddenly started using 'unfit' instead of 'ja'. bdijkstra (talk) 17:25, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
@Bdijstra: IABot generally uses the dead value. It will use unfit, or bot: unknown in cases where the archive URL was present in the URL field and the bot is moving it to the correct archive URL field. —CYBERPOWER (Chat) 17:27, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
Thanks, that answers my question. bdijkstra (talk) 11:37, 13 August 2022 (UTC)

Dušan Kreheľ, thank you for your report. I am not sure what you mean. It is true Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate database, but how is that relevant to the edit the bot made? Harej (talk) 18:48, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
@Harej: As English page variant: The dead link in the section Nitra#External_links are deleted, but Your bot does archiving. Dušan Kreheľ (talk) 19:32, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
The bot runs on a policy of making non-destructive edits. Deleting URLs is a destructive action. It should be left to the human to decide whether or not it should be deleted. Until that time, the bot will supplement the URL with a working archive of the URL, as the objective of the bot is to make dead links still readily accessible via archives, as much as possible. —CYBERPOWER (Chat) 08:46, 13 August 2022 (UTC)

Reference do Internetového archivu

Šlo o reference přímo do Internetového archivu, tedy nebylo vhodné, aby je bot opravoval (periodikum = Wayback Machine, vydavatel = Internet Archive, datum vydání = datum archivace v Internetovém archivu). Marek Genius (talk) 16:59, 31 July 2022 (UTC)

@Marek Genius: I don't see a problem with this edit. The bot is enforcing the proper usage of the template by moving the archive URL to the correct spot on the template.—CYBERPOWER (Chat) 13:11, 5 August 2022 (UTC)
Marek Genius (talk) 06:04, 13 August 2022 (UTC)
@Marek Genius: Some points of information, the Wayback Machine is not a periodical and Internet Archive is not a publisher of said periodicals. You need to be citing the original name of the periodical and its original publisher. The Wayback Machine is only a repository of past copies of websites. If the original URL is dead, it should still be cited. IABot is simply enforcing that. Unfortunately, I still don't see any reason to add an exception for this.—CYBERPOWER (Chat) 16:08, 13 August 2022 (UTC)

About the bots contribution

Operation on English Wikivoyage

Hello. An operator of this bot may wish to join a discussion that I have started in Wikivoyage:Travellers' pub. In many cases links are provided on Wikivoyage so that readers can get up to date information on travel resources. In some cases, I think that it may be more useful for readers to get the dead link rather than an archived page. If the bus company has stopped running the 21 bus, it is more useful to see their error message and from there look for a suitable service, rather than seeing the bus that I could have used last year. Where is it getting this access date from Also, it should not be adding access-dates that are newer than the archive, and doubly so for dead pages. AManWithNoPlan (talk) 13:26, 25 August 2022 (UTC)

AManWithNoPlan, the access date is drawn from the revision history if it was not already explicitly stated in the citation template. Harej (talk) 20:37, 31 August 2022 (UTC)
Which is not when the URL was added to the page, but when the Bot itself added the archive in the first place. Also, the bot does not take into account copy/paste etc. I suggest that the bot never add an access date that is later then the archive - especially for dead links. This access date is completely wrong. AManWithNoPlan (talk) 21:03, 31 August 2022 (UTC)
AManWithNoPlan, before the bot added the archive link, the URL existed in the article with an HTTPS scheme. The bot added a link to an archive with an HTTP scheme. archiving login page of subscription site

Hi. I've tried to fix this but I don't have any permissions to do so. The bot is archiving the login pages of British Newspaper Archive, a subscription site. See [19] for an example. Secretlondon (talk) 22:06, 3 September 2022 (UTC)

Secretlondon, thank you for your report. We have purged the archives for that particular domain, so they will not be used again. For pages you ran the bot on yourself, you will need to remove those links manually. Harej (talk) 20:48, 7 September 2022 (UTC)
Apparently there are some free to view pages, but I don't know the details. It is possible we might want to archive some pages from that site, but obviously not the login page. Secretlondon (talk) 16:50, 8 September 2022 (UTC)

Template:Wayback in Russian Wikipedia

The bot is having problems (or maybe actually causing problems) with the ru:template:Wayback in Russian Wikipedia. Just one illustration: here it adds a bunch of templates to the external links that already have archived copies; and then here in the same article it converts the template it created earlier the same day into quasi-links with a title "Источник" ("Source"). Another similar example can be found here Pretty sure it needs a look by a specialist. I am unaware of such problems in other Wikipedia languages but they deserve a check as well since the template exists in multiple Wikipedias. Deinocheirus (talk) 23:41, 13 September 2022 (UTC)

Bot marking links as dead when they actually aren't

Hi, it was reported on the Finnish Wikipedia that the bot is marking links to as dead when they actually aren't dead ([20]. just redirects to a page where you can buy the digi version of the newspaper and read the article, and those who have an account can open the original link without problems. So those should not be marked as dead. Stryn (talk) 05:51, 19 August 2022 (UTC)

Stryn, thank you for the report. We are tracking the issue here. Harej (talk) 20:20, 24 August 2022 (UTC)

Hi, a similar case occurred in the esperanto wikipedia, with this link to a picture:, that takes a few seconds to be loaded in a firefox browser. I reverted the change manually but the bot again reintroduced the error a few months later, see: [[21]] Shall I wait until the issue is fixed at the bot level before reverting again? --Vinkomarkov (talk) 08:20, 27 August 2022 (UTC)

Vinkomarkov, we tried loading the link so it did not load at all, and this corroborates what the bot is reporting. Do you know if there are any restrictions to accessing this content? Harej (talk) 20:19, 31 August 2022 (UTC)
Hi Harej,
I rechecked and actually the connection procedure for this website is designed for human beings, presumably to avoid the data being pumped by robots for commercial purposes.
The data is publicaly accessible through the main page of the website. Here you can either create a free account, or enter unlogged but with limited functionalities trough the « Entrer » button (what I did) :
Then you have to accept the usage condition, in french. Among others, they mention that the page should be cited in the following format :
Archives départementales des Côtes-d'Armor, reference number, date or last update.
Hopefully after this two steps the link would be working.
Vinkomarkov (talk) 20:00, 4 September 2022 (UTC)
Vinkomarkov, as it turns out, the website in question is geo-restricted. I was not able to access any content on that domain until I used a French proxy. Because of this, we have marked the domain as "permalive," so the bot will not touch those links. Harej (talk) 20:19, 7 September 2022 (UTC)
Thanks Harej! I just corrected the link in the Esperanto version, indicating it is available only from France (supposing experimented user will get that they can use a french proxy, if interested).--Vinkomarkov (talk) 17:16, 11 September 2022 (UTC)

Redirects for dead link tag not resolved

Here IAB readds the dead link tag: et:Special:Diff/6193906. It appears that the bot no longer recognizes redirected template title. This didn't happen before as far as I can remember and the docs also say that it "automatically resolves the redirects". Similarly, here it adds an archive link, and doesn't remove the (redirected) dead link tag: et:Special:Diff/6193923.

Additionally, that's probably a different issue, but a few months ago I tried this in dead link template syntax: {permadead:jah;;yes:ei;;no}. The docs suggest that permadead variable should work in dead link template syntax the same way it works in citation template syntax, but the result was this: et:Special:Diff/6129156 (local language "jah" and English "yes" not split at double semi-colon). Non-default parameter mapping for a citation template disappeared

IABot unable to archive twitter links using the template "cite tweet"

I have noticed that the IABot seems to be unable to add archive urls to references using the "en:Template:Cite_tweet" or "en:Template:Cite_twitter" (both the same) reference templates. It seems to be capable of adding archive urls to twitter references in the standard "cite web" template. I was wondering if this is something the developers could consider implementing? I recognize twitter is not a great source (en:WP:TWITTER) but that does not stop authors from using it. Thanks. - Caddyshack01 (talk) 15:17, 8 October 2022 (UTC)

I'm not sure if this is something that can be automatically corrected. At la:Varietates capsicorum, visited by IA Bot just now, I have easily restored a link marked as dead. Feature improvements: Site blacklist/Archive preferences

Some websites may contain restrictions, such as geoblocking or hard paywalls, which can get saved with the site snapshot. The end result is that the archive becomes completely unusable.

One example of websites producing useless IA archives is the Wall Street Journal. Pages with paywalls are saved on Internet Archive with the same restricted access; I noticed in Theranos on enwiki that all WSJ pages saved by the Internet Archive are useless, so I replaced them all with in revision 1101180173. The archive URLs were all replaced again with Internet Archive's in revision 1116061085; since IA snapshots of WSJ are useless, I'm going to revert this again. (Update: Done.)

Would it be better to have certain source websites blacklisted? If other archive sources are useful, they can also be included with the bot (and preferences/recommendations on sources set on some source websites, such as preferring on WSJ articles). Ntx61 (talk) 14:55, 17 October 2022 (UTC)

How to fix domain data?

Links from this domain are alive, but bot considers them dead (due to Cloudflare protection?) and its archive copies at are broken and useless (possibly due to dynamic content). Previously global state for this domain was set to "Subscription site" per IAB interface, but bot nonetheless added archives and marked links as dead (diff). I managed to delete the archives, and in hope that Cloudflare protection is no longer a problem, as hinted in phab:T316155#8309651, I changed global status to "Alive". However, bot still considers links dead and adds dead link tags (diff). Should we set global status to "Permalive" then? I apparently can't set this myself. Pikne 08:08, 21 October 2022 (UTC)

I agree. The bot appears to be running (it terminates successfully but unusually quickly) but never appears to do anything (nothing archived, nothing rescued, not adding archive URLs). I've been running it on a number of articles where I have added new citations but it doesn't archive anything. OK, sometimes a URL might already be archived, etc, but I use it enough to be suspicious of it never doing anything on any article for the past couple of days, not even adding archive-urls for the non-dead citations. What does this mean? The maintainers have disabled this interface. This is either for maintenance reasons or a security issue has been discovered. I can't archive on the IABot Management Interface. Site HurricaneEdgar 10:43, 5 November 2022 (UTC)

:slwiki operation

Hi, can you please limit the bot to external links in references on :slwiki? Occasionally there are inline external links and adding {{Webarchive}} to them makes the text nearly undecipherable. Thanks. — Yerpo Eh? 15:47, 23 November 2022 (UTC)

Yerpo, I have changed the bot configuration to only edit links within references. Note that it may take some time for the change to go into effect (typically several minutes, but worst case around one day). Harej (talk) 19:35, 23 November 2022 (UTC)

Strange error when I try to submit a bot job

I've been trying to start a batch job, but, whenever I try to submit it, it's been throwing up a page of text saying ERROR 1114: The table 'externallinks_botqueuepages' is full SQL: INSERT INTO externallinks_botqueuepages (`queue_id`, `page_title`) VALUES followed by all the individual page names in the batch job, each one prefixed with the batch-job number; after a second or two, it loads the job-successfully-submitted page, but the submitted job is completely empty, with all the actual pages I'd tried to submit missing (example of such an empty job). @Whoop whoop pull up: The DB ran out of disk space. The DB at Internet Archive that offloads the large non-private data had an error and blocked the connection the the offloading script. Until the DB's excess data has been offloaded, the UI will remain disabled.—CYBERPOWER (Chat) 22:01, 9 November 2022 (UTC)
@Whoop whoop pull up: Added this to the Phabricator ticket regarding the current bot's failures to archive refs contained within CS1 templates, as this might be connected to that unresolved issue at large. Nathan Obral (talk) 18:11, 13 November 2022 (UTC)
@Whoop whoop pull up: and @Nathan Obral:, we have since figured out they were separate issues. The issue reported in this section has been resolved now that the database is no longer out of disk space. Harej (talk) 20:40, 23 November 2022 (UTC)

The bot was cleaning up the citation template, since archive links use a dedicated archive link parameter rather than web link. Harej (talk) 21:41, 9 January 2023 (UTC)

Marking the domain " " as dead

Hello, I am wondering if the domain " " could be marked as dead. I cannot do it myself as I am not an admin on any wiki and it would be very difficult to change individual pages as there are over 300 pages with at least one link to that domain on the English wiki that are not yet archived. CheesedToMeetYou (talk) 00:32, 28 November 2022 (UTC)

CheesedToMeetYou, the domain is marked as dead and there is an ongoing bot task to fix affected articles. Harej (talk) 21:45, 9 January 2023 (UTC)

"Analyze a page" not working

Hi, the website is up but "Analyze a page" isn't working. Entering a article into the textbox and running it, would return 0 references archived despite that article entered into the textbox still has references that yet to be archive or completely not archived before. Also unable to search for URL found in the article entered into "Analyze a page" textbox earlier in "Modify URL Data" because it seem like the tool didn't actually "saved" what references there are on the article into the IABot database when "Analyze a page" was running earlier. When this tool was working previously, running a article through "Analyze a page" without checking "Add archives to all non-dead references (Optional)" checkbox would still "saved" what references there are on the article into the IABot database regardless of whether Wayback Machine was down or its service is overloaded which in turn means the URL found in the article could still be searched on "Modify URL Data" Paper9oll (talk) 12:46, 21 October 2022 (UTC)

I came across the same problem. For example, on the en:OMNY page (where there are multiple un-archived references), the website displays the message "Successfully analyzed the page" but also reports that no links have been analyzed at all. This happens even when the "Add archives to all non-dead references (Optional)" option is checked. Normally, if there are any reference URLs on the article, the tool reports that at least one link has been analyzed, even if no links have been archived, rescued, or tagged. Epicgenius (talk) 13:37, 21 October 2022 (UTC)
I have also found the same problem. --Marshelec (talk) 20:51, 22 October 2022 (UTC)
I also have encountered a similar issue: the bot times out after four seconds and fails to archive any refs in the same manner described above. This has been ongoing for the past 3-4 days and is not limited to any specific page. Any assistance would be appreciated. Nathan Obral (talk) 03:55, 23 October 2022 (UTC)

Same problem. Example: en:Border checkpoint has these refs
  <ref>{{cite web|url=|title=Clearing the Causeway |date=2018-06-09|access-date=2019-02-07}}</ref>
  <ref name=":1">{{Cite web|url=|title=A Look at Woodlands Checkpoint|last=Lim|first=Yan Liang|date=2013-10-13|work=The Straits Times|access-date=2019-06-13}}</ref>
but they are not being picked up. Hongsy (talk) 14:05, 23 October 2022 (UTC)
Encountering the same issue too. Errors occurs with any article. Theknine2 (talk) 06:17, 25 October 2022 (UTC)
Just wanted to add that this is still occurring. I tried to archive en:Daruma-ji and en:Brookwood High School (Georgia) with "Add archives to all non-dead references (Optional)" checked and it will run for ~3.7 seconds (it varies but it's always within 0.1 of 3.7 according to the "Run duration") and doesn't modify anything. - Aoidh (talk) 01:57, 28 October 2022 (UTC)
In this execution of the bot I just did, some of the bare URL refs which were archived did get converted to a CS1 template, while others had the Webarchive template appended. So there's that. Nathan Obral (talk) 18:58, 13 November 2022 (UTC)
  • It’s been a full month since the bot stopped working properly and failing to archive refs in CS1 templates. Multiple users have significant backlogs of pages to archive and it is affecting page reviews. The bot is technically broken and not working in the way I, or other users, are expecting it to. I do not want to have to manually archive over 1,000 refs on my own end. An update or even an acknowledgment of the problem itself would be appreciated. Nathan Obral (talk) 14:49, 21 November 2022 (UTC)

Paper9oll, Epicgenius, Marshelec, Nathan Obral, Hongsy, Theknine2, Aoidh, first, thank you for your reports. As Cyberpower678 stated above the issue is being tracked on Phabricator, but I would like to follow up here as well. After some investigation we discovered a bug that was causing our database of citation templates to overfill with irrelevant templates, and this oversized database caused the "analyze a page" feature to break. This will be an ongoing outage as we need to first figure out what caused the database of citation templates to overfill to begin with. Harej (talk) 20:33, 23 November 2022 (UTC)

@Harej As you know, that the IABOT is not working right now, you should place a warning message on the pages where users start a run, e.g.! That would save users like me a lot of time it takes to find this discussion about a known error. Thanks --Wikipeter-HH (talk) 14:09, 30 November 2022 (UTC)

Breaks existing code style

In some cases (not clear which and why) the bot completely messes the spacings in "vertically formatted" templates. See, for example this edit — the first two occurrences are treated correctly, but after that (from "Строка 72:"/"Строка 75:") it starts adding and deleting quite random number of spaces, making a complete mess. (A wild guess: maybe it tries to count raw bytes instead of Unicode symbols?) — Mikhail Ryazanov (talk) 16:13, 30 October 2022 (UTC)

@Mikhail Ryazanov: That's exactly what is happening here. This is a lingering artifact of the bot's older code before it was meant to be deployed to non-english wikis. I have tracked the issue in a Phabricator ticket. Please subscribe to it to stay informed.—CYBERPOWER (Chat) 21:52, 9 November 2022 (UTC)
@Cyberpower678: OK, besides proposing a solution in that Phabricator ticket discussion, now I've also created a pull request at GitHub. Could you please test whether this helps and at last solve this issue? — Mikhail Ryazanov (talk) 16:16, 28 November 2022 (UTC)

Sorry, Harej, it's not "resolved". Cyberpower678 has only created a Phabricator ticket about this bug. I've commented there, proposing a possible correction, but nothing has actually been done so far to solve the problem. — Mikhail Ryazanov (talk) 02:18, 17 November 2022 (UTC)

@Tomeu87: Hi. If you mean changing to, this is tracked at T320969. If not, please link some diffs to incorrect edits. Thanks --Nintendofan885 (talk) 17:46, 14 November 2022 (UTC)

Dear bot owners, stop, please, replacing links. Do you think that all the editors who added them did not know what they do? These archives are often more complete than archives, by the way. Sneeuwschaap (talk) 04:30, 21 November 2022 (UTC)

Hello Tomeu87, Sneeuwschaap, Tim Wu, thank you for your reports. What caused this to happen is that certain archive links can't be validated by our bot. We are now working around this by having the bot leave those archives alone. Harej (talk) 18:04, 10 January 2023 (UTC)

Replacement of into Internet Archive

Hi operator of InternetArchiveBot. Can you please explain why you change a working link of into Internet Archive? (overhere) Looks like it is unnecessary and the website of Internet Archive is even slower. Ymnes (talk) 08:29, 18 November 2022 (UTC)

Ymnes, Elektrolyt, thank you for your reports. What was causing this is that the bot is unable to validate certain archive URLs, so we have implemented a workaround to leave those archive links alone. Harej (talk) 18:10, 10 January 2023 (UTC)

IABot problem

The IAbot tool does not archive any links, when you try to do it manually. Only the bot itself can right now archive links by following routine lists I guess. Hopefully the problem can be solved. Because right now it does not work for editors who wants to archive links with the bot. BabbaQ (talk) 02:18, 27 December 2022 (UTC)

Seconding this issue; it runs for a few seconds then quickly returns a "successful" run with 0 archived links. RunningTiger123 (talk) 21:35, 28 December 2022 (UTC)
