Bureaucrat flag
Hello, Herbythyme
as a result of the unanimous election held on this page, you've been granted bureaucrat flag. Thank you, M/ 21:03, 19 November 2007 (UTC)
- It was certainly close, but I can only agree with M7's decision (and nearly a day early as well I might add...) Hopefully you won't be kept too busy, but you might want to add Meta:Changing username to watch if you haven't already - it's the new place for user renames. Congrats! Hi Herby, no, I have them from the cvn-channel and from spambot target sites all over the projects also I checked them before blocking. Best regards, thank You very much for Your comment, I do appreciate it very much, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 09:36, 27 November 2007 (UTC)

Hello Herby, yes, this gportal.hu is a difficult one, I looked over it again and left my opinion, what do You think now. rename
Hi Herby, I thought I let You know, since You are around more often, please have a look at [1], thanks, best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 12:04, 2 December 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, I think it is really a good practice for long time users, who are known by their name. For a new user, that only wants a rename and has few edits and is not known under the old name on other wikiprojects, it however is not really necessary imho. But Gangleri is wikiwide known so this was imho definitly the best decision, thank You, kind regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 12:59, 2 December 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks, yes, I have read it. Another thing to the renaming: what I always do is protecting the redirects from the renamed user (user and user_talk only), because if changed the old signature links will break and furthermore if the old username is not blocked a new user under this name will have to ask for unprotection, so everyone will know that it can't be the same user. Best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 13:28, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

Why?
Why did you delete that guy's userpage? It had a link to one website afaik. That isn't "cross-wiki spamming". —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 82.31.11.207 (talk • contribs) 10:49, 3 Dec 2007 (UTC)

re:Advice?
Hi Herby, good idea :) Afaik Renameusertext does not exist (maybe it existed in the past). We could put a tiny note under MediaWiki:Renameuserold (that is right before the old name) or maybe better at MediaWiki:Renameusersuccess (that is the green box right after renaming). I don't know if links will work there, but it is worth a try or we put something there without links :) Best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 13:10, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
- Ui, looks good, I just made some tests on is.wikt because I was too curious to wait until the next rename here :) I found out links work there just fine and added some to the message, please feel free to improve them, thanks :) best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 13:37, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
- I added the links to directly block the old username and talkpage, there the {fullurl:..} did not work but with the http: it did (don't ask me why :) ) This link of course only works if $1 exists (if the user had no old userpage there will be no redirect and hence the link to block a non existing page will not work) but in most cases it will be handy, what do You think? Best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 14:09, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
- I cribbed what you guys did a bit more and took it to Commons (he had already for an earlier version I think). Also there was something Commons does that I think is good so I put it into Meta. Good work, all. ++Lar: t/c 15:33, 8 December 2007 (UTC)

- It is handy. However there are reports that if not used carefully, it can give away info about your system that if you are probing a particularly bad guy, that bad guy may use to try to attack/flood/DoS you... So use the mimic parm if you're worried. ++Lar: t/c 15:34, 8 December 2007 (UTC)

spam blacklist (late)
Hi, just a last note about sforzesca.it (sorry to be so late, I was on holidays), of which I had requested the blacklisting: the user contacts me for an eventual whitelisting. Me too I think that actually there is no valid reason to forget all the spam he produced, and how (dozens of dynamic IPs, block after block, week after week); just in case this request is presented again, maybe to you, I'll still be against a whitelisting. Too much spam, too little content to be linked (scarce sources), too many ads calling for... advertisers in that site... So, well done. Thank you very much and, I hope I'm still in time for this, happy new year :-) --Gianfranco 03:58, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

Confirmation
[2]. Yes, I feel the same, but as you know we don't have any policy about that. :o( Everyone with a user account may vote. And, maybe it would mean too much bureaucracy to set a limit of at least x edits to be allowed to vote in Meta RfAs or confirmations. --Thogo (talk) 12:49, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, I've already wrote a paragraph there, but the discussion sleeps. Maybe we should put a note on this to Meta:Babel? --Thogo (talk) 13:21, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
- While I agree there is no written requirement, the fact we have no written rule doesn't mean we should count all votes incoming. As Majorly said, the accepted wisdom on meta teaches b'crats to discount votes from the less involved editors. I am however of favor to write down some requirement, even if it sounds bureaucratic, since it has been a problem since long before. However in the previous discussion we received some negative responses from such less involved editors: they honestly said they opposed because they might lose the right to vote, even they were responded anyway their votes would be discounted. So while I am okay to see such requirement written down, I personally am skeptical if we can make a consensus. Rather it would be fruitful to set it a rule that meta b'crats may discount votes whose voter they think less involved on their discretion with a counter-balanced remark any editor either registered or anons are considered a part of meta community and their comment (not vote) will be appreciated. --Aphaia 14:05, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
Herby, this same IP that you just reverted here[3] also fiddled with the spam records on en.wikipedia today. It's got a mixed record on other projects but is also heavily used.
I've run a port scan and found a couple of open ports indicating this is an open proxy. I started to block it on en.wikipedia totally as an open proxy but then noticed its history:
- en:User:203.147.0.44 -- see comment
- en.wikipedia block log -- lots of discussion and uncertainty as to how to handle
I went ahead and blocked it anyway, but leaving it usable for users with accounts.
I'm still new to all this blocking stuff -- feel free to revert me on en.wikipedia if I got this wrong.
Thanks, --A. B. (talk) 14:08, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
- Ooh don't you love different projects :) To me (& a few on en wp) it is a kinda %age thing - how likely is it that the next edit will be unwanted. I've blocked here for a year (max to me) but this tells another story.
- I'm to new at en wp to be sure what is best but your view seems sensible to me. It is against policy after all. Let me know if I can help - cheers --Herby talk thyme 14:45, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
- And - indef is maybe too much. The internet is a fluid place. Zombies get fixed, open proxies, get closed, IPs change hands. I see folk doing 3 & 5 years but I will not do so. Had enough philosophy for today:) Good job it is a wiki! --Herby talk thyme 14:54, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

I sincerely hope that you will not "go" in a moment of anger. That you have issues with inactivity is fine - I agree. However let us please first tackle those who are inactive rather than those who do work rather hard across wiki. You are one of the people who care about this and are needed to deal with such issues. open proxy
I know you have blocked hundreds (even thousands) of proxy/zombies, but you never tagged any of the talk pages of those blocked as proxy so is there another way of finding all open proxies blocked so that it can be blocked on other wikis as well? O_O ..--Cometstyles 11:45, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
- I'm lazy :) Most of the wikis I work on don't bother (Books/Commons) and I've never seen tags here either I don't think.
- There is a page somewhere on Meta with some listed (can't find it at present) but it is not well maintained and I doubt they will have been checked either.
- Blocking proxies really does work - when I started on books I was doing loads of vandal reversion. As proxies got blocked it went down and now is mostly "school vandalism" there. In practice the reason I wanted CU was to deal with vandals who largely edit from open proxies.
- Currently my info comes from the block log of the user of that last one on en wp, Birdy's block log here and reviewing this for example (they are not all proven OPs but often there are some). Hope it helps - cheers --Herby talk thyme 12:09, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
- yeah you might be surprised :P ..thanks :) ..--Cometstyles 12:19, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
- Interesting. My problem with that is the the internet is a dynamic place - I'll bet a few of those from 2006 etc are now "fixed" particularly the zombies. It is the reason I never block for more than 1 year (though many do). Quite a few of the Xrumer ones do not come up on any list because they are so new (and may be fixed before they get to a list!). Blacklist
How does one go about getting a URL added to the blacklist? I noticed you have some experiance with the list so I decided to ask, I discovered and reverted a bit of links from various en.wp articles related to the blog at http://alaivani.com/ example there were a few other links added by that user, but nothing else seems a COI, ( I see it as a COI as the use linking has the same name as the site, and the owner of the site is selling products on e-bay from the site.) So I was wondering if it would be possible to get that URL blacklisted. (note if you reply and get no response for a few days I may forget to check back here, I am Dureo en.wp also.) re:Thanks
Hi Herby, np, seems to be coming from km...
@this userpage, I have just deleted it, because it was added by an IP anyway (making us the decision easier)

...and all other toolserver tools are likely down. There is a bug in mySQL which has b0rked up yarrow (one of the database servers). Most tools will fail under such circumstances, since the programmers haven't considered this scenario. Hopefully the mySQL bug will be fixed soon, the yarrow will come back to life :D – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 20:13, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
Haitian creole projects
Hi Herby,
Thank you for your encouragements ! I'd like to know if it exists a page that summarizes all projects in a specific language ?
I'm currently adminsitrator of the wikipedia and Wikisource in haitian creole and i'm developping the wiktionary and wikiquote inside incubator.I'll ask for adminship for them too; is there a way to create new features inside a wiki-project (like rich editor in the wikipedia or pre-written model inside wiktionary ...etc in order to make easyer sontributions)
thank you ! --Masterches 18:22, 29 January 2008 (UTC)
Your recent edit
It may well not have been your intention however you removed quite a lot of existing text with it. Please be careful in future - thanks --Herby talk thyme 20:21, 30 January 2008 (UTC)

Changed usage for {{closed}}
Hello Herbythyme. At some point you used {{closed}} with the "text" parameter (ie, {{closed|text=Rogue deletion omg. ~~~~}}
). This will no longer work correctly in the future, because the "text" parameter will contain the entire discussion (to wrap it in a coloured box). Instead, please use {{closed|Summary}}
or {{closed|1=Summary}}
(for complex summaries). Thanks. —{admin} Pathoschild 00:14:21, 05 February 2008 (UTC)
Hi. May you reblock this IP with "anonymous users only"? Some of conscientious users from Russia are obliged to use it. ~ putnik 16:27, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

I'm the only one who edited the article. Ergo, I have every right to tag it for CsD. Zenwhat 12:50, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

Spam blacklist
Thanks for that. I assumed (wrongly) it was a place for people to prevent their links being spammed, but I'm wrong. --Whitsun 18:18, 24 February 2008 (UTC)
Blocking
Re. your latest year long block of that IP... I know who the user is, but others may not. Could you possibly mention it's the IP of a sockpuppet in the log summary next time? Thanks, Majorly (talk) 15:22, 25 February 2008 (UTC)
Template
Created Template:WPSPAM for adding en reports here, I was wondering if it could be protected?. I've already used it once, so feel free to tweak ect... Left the same on AB's page --Hu12 20:08, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

- Hi Herby, thanks again, probably a dossier in Vandalism reports would be a good idea, this is really cross-wiki :(
- I will not be home this weekend, so I might not answer as fast as usual. Best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| ∇ 14:03, 22 March 2008 (UTC)
hi
i'm new here.
I have edited other wikis before, but I don't know exactly what to do on this one. I would like to help with translation, but I don't know where to go to find my way around on this site.
