limited server resources

edit

When I finally found the CommonsClash, I can't use it due to limited server resources :-( Isn't it possible to limit the CommonsClash in some way, so make it possible to use even at larger wikis? For example checking 500 images starting with the letter F shouldn't be too hard on the servers, right? --Boivie 23:13, 3 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

No, it's not possible. Serving the result is not the problem, finding all images in question is. To server 500 images starting with F would require to first find all images in question, then sort them, then skip everything up to F, then output 500. This can be done implicitely inside the database, but it's currently still to heavy on the server. sorry. -- Duesentrieb 10:52, 4 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
While the above is true in principle, i just found out that the limit was being compared to the wrong number, and it was too restrictive anyway. I have removed it for now, the tool is now available for all wikis. Enjoy :) -- Duesentrieb 12:48, 4 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, I will enjoy it :) My skills in database and server logistics are very limited, but shouldn't there be some way to make this tool server-friendly, but still usable for the largest wikipedias? Maybe that each time the tool is run, 1000 "random" (sequential) images is tested, starting where the tool finished the last run? I mean that the images could appear random to the user, while they are in some kind of order like they are stored in the database. Well, I don't know if it's possible or not. But I think this is a great tool, and it would be nice if it could be used at the largest wikipedias without worries of the server resources. For now I will enjoy using it at wikis with less than 5000 images :) --Boivie 18:20, 4 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
