Learnings

• "Wiki Loves Monuments" is not a registered trademark - the publisher was afraid of violating a trade mark
• photos without description are nearly useless ("church", "castle", or "hospital" are not adequate descriptions)
• low resolution is a common problem; but I had had special requirements: for A3 calendars 3508 × 4961 pixels with 150 dpi; for A4 calendars 2480 × 3508 pixel with 150 dpi
• in the publishing industry nobody knows about Creative Commons licenses ("Is CC-BY-SA-3.0 the artist's name?")
• landscape mode beats upright mode
• sometimes the credit line can only have ASCII letters → if the photographers name or credit line contains non-ASCII letters like umlauts, arabic, or cyrillic letters, an additional ASCII version would be helpful
• Wikimedia Commons doesn't request the uploaders to define a credit line; I decided to use the user name or the real name if provided
• to add a description in more than one language I started to use Template:mld on the file page (shows all languages side by side) and Template:LangSwitch on the overview page (shows description in the user's language or in English)
• I was searching for images with high resolution what is currently not possible. As a workaround I was searching for images bigger than 3 MB by scrolling through all images of a category. Searching for the text "3.", "4." and so on on the category page doesn't help because the range goes up to 12 MB.
• Feature requests for Wikimedia Commons:
  • Search within a category / specific categories
  • Add a section "credit line" to the upload form
  • Ask uploaders to provide a ASCII version of their credit line (maybe with the support of transliteration tools for names)
• Feature requests for Wiki Love Monuments:
  • Nominate 12 instead of 10 images (for the calendar makers ;-))
  • provide a category "quality images"
  • sort out bullshit images like selfies, cat photos
• buildings should have borders around them on the photo to allow re-users to make different formats of the image by cutting the borders
• there should be the original photos of over-hdr-ed photos, black-and-white photos, and collages
