Discussion
editThe first draft in based on award2, no need to stick with it. - RoyBoy 05:50, 15 December 2005 (UTC)
As per KillerChihuahua, award guidelines should follow:
- We have to en:WP:CITE (too much) and be sure it follows en:WP:STYLE
- RoyBoy 05:57, 15 December 2005 (UTC)
Second draft
editDid some changes to color and layout, and setup references which I hope you can can supplement... and I was toying with the idea of giving a third barnstar, but we would really have to justify that to ourselves with research. Oh, and I'm going to add a date footer, or maybe that should be a header instead. - RoyBoy 19:05, 15 December 2005 (UTC)
- I love the way its shaping up. I added placeholders for cites 2 and 3, because vandalism and overzealousness is obvious for needing refs per WP:CITE. So far every ref I've thought of is either too cheesy or too close to NPA (Ed comes to mind for overzealousness) - who has a brighter idea than mine?
- When in doubt we can use anons.
- Question: Something special here? what did you have in mind? KillerChihuahua 22:47, 15 December 2005 (UTC)
- I have no idea. :"D A small thin pretty graphic of some kind; not even sure of the context (ie. Barnstar, Esperanta, a JM theme, ID themed, Wiki-theme or entirely random pic).
- I added some piped links - mouseover to see where they go. I didn't add the en: so you'll have to paste in url if you want to view article. This is an idea: I'm not married to it. KillerChihuahua 23:06, 15 December 2005 (UTC)
- We'll see, its certainly a good outlet for humor. - RoyBoy 00:29, 16 December 2005 (UTC)
- What genius picked Johnny Mnemonic? Obviously KC is Molly, fighting off the lo-tek hordes rather than the Yakuza on the Killing Floor (cue music by Howlin' Wolf). Me, probably the deranged old dolphin full of memories. Anyway, JMn's obviously the hero. .....dave souza 10:20, 16 December 2005 (UTC)
- We'll see, its certainly a good outlet for humor. - RoyBoy 00:29, 16 December 2005 (UTC)
- I'm assuming you checked edit history and already know that it was RB, our Fearless Leader. The only possible reason to ask that q is so you establish that you're the dolphin. :P KillerChihuahua 11:47, 16 December 2005 (UTC)
- If you're the dolphin, shouldn't u be squealing or something? Oh yeah, I forgot, you can cut through encryption like a hot knife through butter. Hehe, those low-techs tickle me... although that crazy Yakuza chick with the bazooka was something special. Anybody with me on this? Oh yeah, love the Category thing! - RoyBoy 00:49, 17 December 2005 (UTC)
- Quickly looks at short story, no squeals, communicates by flashing lights in crude VDU, but assure you I'm not strung out on smack. Note I didn't try to put a name to Dog, the Lo Tek with implanted giant Doberman canines, both opposing hitech science and making use of it. References and category looking very well. By the way, for the image this pic kept coming to mind, but perhaps too big. ... dave souza 17:40, 17 December 2005 (UTC)
- I'm thinking more a monk with a mop and bucket. Now, that's cheesy. But that's what came to what passes for my mind.
- What about modifying the whole shebang slightly as an article? I can do a quick down and dirty, if anyone is unsure of either what I mean or how it would come out. I am also still seeking feedback on the wikilinked words. KillerChihuahua 18:00, 17 December 2005 (UTC)
- Dunno, barstars should stand out; although the wikilinked words are nice, I think it looks too busy; but if the footnotes looked normal maybe it would be okay. - RoyBoy 01:30, 18 December 2005 (UTC)
Third draft
editCheezydraft idea as requested, based on en:Thelonious Monk time mag pic.: if it's along the right lines it can be tidied up, coloured in etc, if not feel free to make other suggestions. . ... dave souza 01:18, 18 December 2005 (UTC)
- Personally, I think that's friggin awesome. Look at'em go... not sure that the background color should be, it could be blue, we could change the background, or I had half a mind to make a white box for the awards... looks alright. - RoyBoy 01:30, 18 December 2005 (UTC)
- I love the cheesydraft image! KillerChihuahua 12:28, 18 December 2005 (UTC)
- Penny plain, tuppence coloured. ..dave souza 13:06, 18 December 2005 (UTC)
(reduce indent) Yes! That's fabulous. KillerChihuahua 13:11, 18 December 2005 (UTC)
- Looking good, only thing I don't like is the Category box color; actually I think all the category colouring could be tweaked, font, fill and outline. - RoyBoy 22:21, 18 December 2005 (UTC)
- Wow that is nice. You all are professionals, I'm just glad to be along for the ride! By the way, I love RoyBoy changing his English from American (color) to British (colour) mid-sentence. :) -Parallel or Together? 04:33, 19 December 2005 (UTC)
- Heh, American + British = Canadian! - RoyBoy 05:07, 19 December 2005 (UTC)
- I count the fact that you people can spell as a strong positive! Colour, harbour, diarrhoea, oesophagus, amoeba, manoeuvre, behaviour :p Guettarda 18:26, 20 December 2005 (UTC)
Fourth draft
editI'm moving the third draft to my sandbox to Wikify the links prior to the presentation; which I plan to make tomorrow in the evening (EST). - RoyBoy 06:10, 19 December 2005 (UTC)
- Are we sure it's ready? There's no need to rush this. Looking at JM's User page, I get the impression that he appreciates simple elegance, over flashy bars and colouration. As such, I'd suggest toning down the draft. In my opinion it would look more dignified/professional. -- Ec5618 15:07, 19 December 2005 (UTC)
- Either option looks fine to me. A nice tweak would to be to move the darker star below and the lighter star to the top, if that's possible, so that the visual weight's underneath. ....dave souza 19:42, 19 December 2005 (UTC)
- No problem, deleted it from sandbox. We can vote; apt observations though. - RoyBoy 04:48, 20 December 2005 (UTC)
- How's this? I tried to match the banner to the multilicence banner, assuming JM does in fact multilicence, and would like to keep the two banners together, it should be rather pretty. I think it looks distinguished. -- Ec5618 12:20, 20 December 2005 (UTC)
- Marvelous, although I do want my shaded box idea
somewhere herefor an award at some point. I like the JM and SA awards as is. :"D RoyBoy 07:02, 21 December 2005 (UTC)
- Marvelous, although I do want my shaded box idea
Someone (was it in RB's sandbox?) raised the issue of visual balance, and if the darker star should be below rather than above?duh! Any thoughts on dave's comment about visual balance? And other than that, are we ready to pick a final version and award it? Guettarda 19:30, 21 December 2005 (UTC)
- Yeah it makes sense, done. - RoyBoy 21:59, 21 December 2005 (UTC)
- I also took the liberty (now that we have more editors signed) to increase the size of all the images by 10px? Any further thoughts on image sizes? - RoyBoy 22:13, 21 December 2005 (UTC)
References
editI added references, my favorite is Argument from ignorance, which is appropriately titled. :"D - RoyBoy 02:04, 17 December 2005 (UTC)
- Oh, me too! "...or even stars!" I laughed out loud. These are perfect. KillerChihuahua 04:09, 17 December 2005 (UTC)
Deployment?
editSo are we ready to deploy JM and SA now? Which version?
Fourth draft Ec5618 multilicense: RoyBoy, Ec5618
Third draft:
If so, I assume their talk page is the page to put them?
Should I make note of these group awards elsewhere?
Signpost? Goings-on? Perhaps even Barnstar talk page?
Actually I gave this some thought, what should we call these?
Barnstar Busters? Cluster awards? Beats me...
but it should be called something snazzy!
- Erm, is this a vote? I vote for the 4th version?
- As for placement, looking over Image:Barnstar.png, it seems that a lot of people keep their barnstars on their User talk page, and a lot of people keep them in User. I've always thought barnstars should be placed on the User page, and should be aesthetically pleasingly placed and should fit into their environment like a plaque. -- Ec5618 11:11, 21 December 2005 (UTC)
- Yup a vote, me place ya. - RoyBoy 16:15, 21 December 2005 (UTC)
- [Oops, should have put this here rather than above. Apologies.] As regards placement on a page, the user's own page is the obvious location. But then the aesthetics matter even more, as it'd be a shame to muck up the very page of the person we're honouring. Would it be possible to rotate the current draft so that it's landscape with a couple of columns of text? A landscape banner is probably less likely to upset an existing user page than a portrait one. Although I suppose that depends on how the text in the banner is arranged. Anyway, keep up the good work. Cheers, Plumbago 139.166.244.113 13:00, 21 December 2005 (UTC)
- That is certainly a valid concern, but looking at SA user page, it's minimalist to say the least, and I don't think it would muck it up... too much. It may encourage him to tweak his userpage and add more in fact. I would mess up his talk page, but that provides him even more impetus to move it to his User page. - RoyBoy 16:15, 21 December 2005 (UTC)
In my experience, barnstars are usually awarded on the talk page, and the recipient then decides where to put them. Guettarda 14:18, 21 December 2005 (UTC)
- Agreed. - RoyBoy 16:15, 21 December 2005 (UTC)
- So? Is everyone content? We could still award the barnstars in 2005. In my opinion, JM's banner is ready (version 4), though SA's may still be spruced up a bit. I say, let's decide how to present the damn thing, and do so. -- Ec5618 00:03, 23 December 2005 (UTC)
- Everything was set, then I pulled back. I'm on Wikivacation until the 27th, we can do FM then. - RoyBoy 02:51, 23 December 2005 (UTC)
- I will be on vacation from the 27th to January 13th, but whenever you get back, I think that the award is ready for FM and I vote for draft 4. -Parallel or Together? 05:27, 26 December 2005 (UTC)
- Just got back from holidays, and seeing Parallel's message kicked me into action. I just awarded FeloniousMonk so I hope it will be a good Christmas present for him. As I deployed I thought of putting something in the template to encourage people to add their signature after the fact, if they wanted to express their support but were not contacted by me. Is this a good idea that should be adopted for our templates by default? (PS: When I updated the date on FM's talk page, I forgot to bold it... but then I realized it looks better that way, I think.) - RoyBoy 06:46, 26 December 2005 (UTC)
