Content creation

edit

Why? For the last few years, CIS-A2K is trying to engage or encourage communities to create or develop content in their languages. A2K is focusing on content enrichment because outside Wikimedia users only know about the online content and Wikimedians write for everyone. To run the community or any language's Wikipedia or Wikimedia project, this is a need to encourage the Wikimedians to enrich the content in their native languages.

What? CIS-A2K has started a mini edit-a-thon model in October 2020. It is a two-day edit-a-thon which contains a specific theme for each time. During these two days, all interested Wikimedians write articles in their own language Wikipedia. Apart from this, the edit-a-thon does not restrict to a particular project even during the edit-a-thon Wikimedians can edit any Wikimedia project to follow the theme.

'Conducted edit-a-thons and Impact In 2021-2022, A2K organised five national level edit-a-thons and those were Mahatma Gandhi 2021 edit-a-thon, Festive Season 2021 edit-a-thon, International Mother Language Day 2022 edit-a-thon, International Women's Month 2022 edit-a-thon and June Month Celebration 2022 edit-a-thon.

A total of 30 participants contributed, and articles were created and expanded to 381, 168 Wikidata items, and 64 proofread pages during these edit-s-thons.

Apart from this, A2K tried to engage and involve communities to enrich the content for their language Wikimedia projects. Although, A2K encouraged communities to conduct two-day edit-a-thons for their communities and make a preferable list which must be edited in their languages. Two communities initiated to organise a two-days edit-a-thon to follow the mini edit-a-thon model. The objective of the edit-a-thon was to celebrate Dalit History Month on the occasion of Ambedkar Jayanti. Punjabi did for two days and Santali for three days.

From the Punjabi community, During Ambedkar Jayanti, two-days Wikipedia Edit-a-thon was on the dates of 13-14 April 2022. In this event, 13 participants signed and showed their interest as a participant. 10 users contributed to the same and did amazing work. Editors edited articles related to Ambedkar directly or indirectly. Two articles were expanded and 32 new articles were created.

In Ambedkar Jayanti Three-day Wikipedia Edit-a-thon, five editors signed and 4 to 5 articles were created.

Additional Funding Request for Indic Hackathon 2022

The Indic MediaWiki Developers User Group and the organizers of Indic Hackathon 2022 made a request to ask for some support from CIS-A2K. The User Group organized a local meetup on the main hackathon during 20-22 May, in Hyderabad. The goal is to bring together technical contributors from India for a regional hackathon as a local meetup of the upcoming Wikimedia Hackathon 2022, to resolve pending technical issues, and bugs, brainstorm on tooling ideas, and foster connections between contributors. A2K supported the event for logistics and travel to make the event successful.
