User:Meanos/Ideas about the translation process
Current situation
edit- X wants to translate and arrives on meta.wikimedia.org
- X finds something to do on Translation requests and tries to understand how to get her first translation up.
- X begins to translate, reports on the main page, reads pages and talk pages to find out about convention, guidelines...
- X gets bored, or at least lazy.
Some ideas: a brand new X
edit- X wants to translate for, say, fr. She arrives on Translation coordination/fr, which provides:
- specific informations for French translators, like French urgent requests, glossary, guidelines....
- templates displaying general requests (see Demandes de traduction for a -messy?- example)
- X can also visit Translation_requests made of general templates
2 is for general purpose (information platform), while 1 is intented as a local translation process platform. The main advantage of having to "main" pages is to manage two different problematics: the general purpose page is made to provide information about all pages currently under a translation process, while coordination pages such as Translation coordination/fr are the platforms for co-operation/co-action (and language targeted information). In fact, if the system is correctly built, one could follow only a coordination page, since useful information from the general purpose page is to be provided on all coordination pages by templates.
We could streamline pages organization like this:
2 General purpose:
1 Local translations:
- Translation/fr
- Translation/fr/urgent
- Translation/fr/à faire
- Translation/fr/en cours
- Translation/fr/Glossaire
- Translation/Traducteurs
Translation coordination/fr would be made of both and templates, with specific information in the local language as well.
When X picks up a pending translation, she works within Translation/fr/Title of the page in French. Translation/fr/Title of the page in English redirects towards the page with the French title. So, on the general purpose requests page (Translation/Requests), one can simply write something like:
* urgent! Translation/NewPageToBeTranslated from http://wmf.org/FooBar ** Translation/fr/NewPageToBeTranslated ** Translation/ja/NewPageToBeTranslated ok, done! ** ...
to announce a new request. I don't think having the title translation as the title of the page will be an issue, since one doesn't change it daily... By the way, it requires to have the redirects up before announcing anything (well, if there is a coordinator, he can adress first mistakes :).
