What problem does this solve? edit

When a group of wikimedians want to join forces and outreach other knowledge communities to join the Wikimedia movement, some common problems arise. It is very frequent that GLAMs show reluctant to applying open licenses, which makes it difficult to develop a partnership with a local Wikimedia chapter.

What is the solution? edit

The solutions are two main workflows that need to be addressed in order to either overcome this mindset GLAMs tend to have, or alleviate the time spent on one cultural institution to build a partnership.

1) Explain the benefits or return of working with Wikimedia edit

The main argument is that cultural heritage belongs to its people, and the community should have free and open access to it.
Further, it is widely known that a collaboration with Wikimedia gives more visibility and visits to the GLAM's platforms (like the webpage, social media channels and event even the physical place where it is located). There are three main indicators to track visibility: social events (that generate media coverage), article views and social media engagement.

2) Understand the background of the GLAM edit

Some museums have a more commercial approach. You can still offer them a list of activities or projects that do not involve content release.

General considerations: how to measure this change? edit

There are two possible metrics that can help you track how GLAMs change their mindset:

  • # of institutions that are responsive to proactive outreach in a given timeframe.
  • # of institutions that reach out to the local Wikimedia organization in a given time frame, even if there is no capacity to develop a partnership.
