What are the objectives of this program? Please include metrics.
  • The program aims at bridging the gap of absence of reading materials in the form of books (fiction, fiction, biographical, travel related and encyclopedic)on the digital ecosystem.
  • By employing mulch-pronged approach CIS-A2K intends to bring a new set of Indian language resources onto the online domain.
  • Offer new and creative initiatives for spreading the message of Open Knowledge Resources.
  • Set off a vigorous collaboration with other WMF projects.
  • Build the volunteer base with different activities and bring in interested parties hitherto untapped.
  • Contribute to the longevity of resources created by the WMF grant

  • CIS-A2K has leveraged its institutional partnerships into strategies of content acquisition and has built on the support of the volunteer community towards content donation.
  • Higher Educational Institutions have shown interest and have seen the merit of contributing Encyclopedias for uploading on Wikisource.
  • Dedicated Wikisource activities have been planned and executed for content uploading.
  • Content uploaded on Wikisource is being used to generate new articles on the Indian Language Wikipedia.
Activities conducted.
  • Partnership with University of Mysore for digitizing and re-releasing first 6 volumes of the Kannada Vishwakosha (encyclopaedia) resulted in about 1400 folios on Kannada Wikisource.
  • Odia Volunteer Group from KISS was supported to digitize some books of Odia author Dr Jagannnath Mohanty, whose books have been re-licensed under CC-BY-SA 3.0
  • CIS-A2K was also instrumental in getting 5 books of noted author and educator Ramakrushna Nanda including an encyclopedia "Biswa Parichay" re-licensed under Creative Commons Share-Alike 4.0 (CC-by-SA 4.0).
  • CIS-A2K was instrumental in getting Ten books of Syed Naseer Ahamed, historian, advocate, journalist and author under Creative Commons Share-Alike 4.0 (CC-by-SA 4.0) license.
  • CIS-A2K has also got two poetry compilations relicensed under CC-by-SA 4.0 license. All of these books will eventually be digitized on Telugu Wikisource.
  • CIS-A2K has also got Odia poet Bharat Majhi's 5 books re-licensed under a CC-by-SA 4.0. All of these books will eventually be digitized on Odia Wikisource.
  • Due to the efforts of CIS-A2K, Govt of Karnataka re-released 105 books it had published under Creative Commons license during this period.
  • CIS-A2K has also got two poetry compilations relicensed under CC-by-SA 4.0 license.
What worked and what did not?
  • Content donation efforts are extremely challenging and require a sustained approach. CIS-A2K has been extremely fortunate in aligning with such institutions.
  • Content donation is often muddled as the awareness level regarding Copyright law and Creative Commons License
  • Non availability of efficient OCR tools have hampered the progress of content uploading activities.

GROWTH:' How did your entity grow over the past quarter vs. the previous quarter (e.g., Number of active editors reached/involved/added, number of articles created, number of events held, number of participants reached through workshops)?

  • * During this quarter CIS-A2K has focused on Indian language Wikipedias as per the language area work plans. As an added measure CIS-A2K was focused and committed towards acting as a catalytic agent for the growth of Indian Language Wikisource projects.
  • Telugu Wikipedia was a major site of CIS-A2K intervention. With CIS-A2K's support Telegu Wikipedia has increased the volunteer base, seen an upward spike in content generation.
  • CIS-A2K had invested this quarter in bringing traction into telegu Wikisource and this has lead to fruitful accomplishments.here for the detailed report of all activities and events in Telugu language area during this quarter.
  • Wikipedia orientation program was conducted at IIMC Dhenkanal, Orissa and at Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), Bhubaneswar , which resulted in generating new content on Odia Wikipedia.
  • CIS-A2K's efforts in bringing traction to Odia Wikisource provided rich dividends as Odia author Dr Jagannnath Mohanty's books have been re-licensed under CC-BY-SA 3.0 earlier. CIS-A2K was also instrumental in getting 5 books of noted author and educator Ramakrushna Nanda including an encyclopedia "Biswa Parichay" re-licensed under Creative Commons Share-Alike 4.0 (CC-by-SA 4.0).   • CISA2K worked with the emerging Konkani Wikimedia community remotely and helped the Konkani community organise 3 outreach events in Goa. This resulted in spreading the volunteer base for the nascent Konkani Wikipedia. Please see here for a detailed Konkani Langauge Plan
  • Nine outreach sessions were conducted during this period to instill growth in Kannada Wikipedia. Along with the intensive Wikisource activities that are being anchored by CIS-A2K, Kannada Wikipedia has seen a positive impact from the Kannada Wikisource initiative.   • Christ University students, who are groomed as Wikimedians by CIS-A2K, have done typing on Wikisource in Tamil, Sanskrit and Hindi.
  • About 201 pages of the book, १८५७ का भारतीय स्वातंत्र्य समर were typed by the students from Department of Hindi, Christ University.
