There were two Software Freedom Day (SFD) celebrations in 2017 sponsored by Computer Professionals' Union. The first SFD happened at Polytechnic University of the Philippines - Taguig Campus in Bicutan, Taguig, Metro Manila on September 16, 2017 while the second SFD was held at Lyceum of the Philippines University in Intramuros, Manila on September 22, 2017. Part of the SFD program was to discuss free culture and Wikimedia projects especially Wikipedia, it's flagship project. [1]
Two Filipino Wikimedians were invited to give talks about free culture and Wikimedia. The invited speakers, Jojit Ballesteros and Bel Ballesteros, emphasized the importance of the vision and mission of Wikimedia and how it relates to free culture as well as how Wikipedia works by discussing its five pillars. To better understand the work being done by the Wikimedia movement and to remind the participants of the existence of Wikipedia in the Philippine languages, they were given stickers with the vision of the Wikimedia Foundation printed in English and translated in several Philippine-based languages.
