THIS IS A DRAFT
The following might improve the outcome of Writing Contests, Competitions and Initiatives:
- Accompanying edit-a-thons and Wikimeets increase the number of new users. These can be organized together with partners like libraries, museums and institutions.
- A central page on Meta helps if the event is supposed to be international and involves several language versions taking part.
- A list of red links as article suggestions helps the contributors who do not find a new subject on their own.
- To announce the event and as sites for advertisement there are several sites and methods available. Some of them have proven to be more successful than others to draw in participants. Those are:
- en:Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost: Internal news pages like the English Signpost and its equivalents in different languages, like for example de:Wikipedia:Kurier and nl:Wikipedia:Wikimedia/Nieuwsbrief Wikimedia Nederland reach many Wikipedians. The English Signpost had for example 7,815 readers in August 2016, the German Kurier 14,355. Advantage: Many Wikipedians read the news pages and can be reached with one article advertising the Writing Initiative.
- Announcing the event on many talk pages at the same time, for instance for Wikipedians that are interested in new events in the first place. Example: nl:Wikipedia:Wikiproject/Themaweek/Verzendlijst.
- SiteNotices resp. CentralNotices are a good way to reach a huge amount of potential contributors. Timing is of the essence since they could collide with other SiteNotices.
