ESN Forum rules and guidelines edit

(for discussion)

  • Absolutely nothing said here will be considered a topic ban violation.
  • You may NOT use this page to request that other editors make changes to pages from which you are banned.(see WP:PROXYING)
  • All other ordinary rules concerning civility and etiquette still apply such as ... (list some of the most important ones).
  • There's a no soapboxing rule but it is treated more liberally than elsewhere on wikipedia, since some editors may come here after being banned for soapboxing.
  • Editors responding here are expected to assume good faith and to act as a friendly listening ear, as you might if listening to a friend. Please be aware that editors who come here may be angry and frustrated with wikipedia and they may need a friendly atmosphere to talk about the things that are bothering them before they can calm down enough to be helped.
  • This is not an appeals noticeboard, and it's usually best if the editors who took out the action to ban the editor or who voted to ban them in the discussion don't intervene here to put forward their case for banning them. We want to act as a friendly listening ear. We can use these ESN guidelines to deal with any issues such as soapboxing. You can however start a new discussion thread here, for any issues you wish to discuss separately.
  • You are in control of your own discussion thread here - you are the focus as the one who is asking for help. Rarely, you might find that other editors are making things worse or confusing the issue with their comments. If so, you can ask them to stop commenting on your thread. For example if asking for help to draft an appeal, you may wish to exclude the opposing editors from the appeal draft discussions, as a way to get space to develop your draft without interruptions.
  • Uninvolved editors and admins are very welcome to help give an unbiased perspective. In particular the closing admin for the case may well have useful things to say here.
  • This is not a place to continue a general discussion of the topic you were banned for. Please try to keep your discussions here focused on trying to find a way forward. and on things we can help you with. As part of that you can discuss the topic ban discussion but note that this is not an appeals board and nothing said here can help your case in a future appeal. But we can help you to draft an appeal.
  • It's not so much the topic that's important here as the focus. Are you discussing the topic in order to try to win us over to your views on the topic? That's not likely to lead anywhere. Or are you discussing it in order to help us understand how you got into the situation you are in and to ask for our help about how to move forward? If so, we can surely help.

For examples of some of things you may want to discuss, see List of some of the example topics we can help with
