বিভিন্ন জরিপ ও সাক্ষাৎকারে দেখা গেছে যে উইকিপিডিয়ানেরা অনলাইনের বৃহত্তম বিশ্বকোষে অবদান রাখা শুরু করার কারণ হিসেবে বলেন, উইকিপিডিয়ার জ্ঞানকে উন্মুক্ত করার প্রয়াসে তাদের প্রেরণা জুগিয়েছে। অন্য ভাবে বললে, তারা নিজেদের ভিতর থেকে একটি পার্থক্য গড়ে তোলার প্রয়োজন অনুভব করেন। এই প্রেরণা পরীক্ষার মাধ্যমে প্রমাণ করা যেতে পারে। দেখা যেতে পারে, উইকিপিডিয়ায় অবদান রাখার ফলে তারা যে প্রভাব রাখছেন, এ সম্পর্কে তাদের জানালে তারা আরো বেশি উৎসাহ বোধ করেন কী না। প্রভাবের উদাহরণ হিসেবে দেখানো যেতে পারে তাদের অবদান রাখা নিবন্ধটি কতবার পরিদর্শন করা হয়েছে তার সংখ্যা। যদি প্রভাব সম্পর্কে জানলে তারা অধিক উৎসাহ বোধ করেন, তাহলে নবাগত উইকিপিডিয়ানদের "অবদানের পরিসংখ্যান" দেখানোটা তাদের আগ্রহ ধরে রাখার ক্ষেত্রে কার্যকর ভূমিকা রাখতে পারে।
Methods edit
In collaboration with Wikipedians in Bangla, German and Slovak Wikipedias, we will conduct a randomized controlled trial in which newly registered users ('newcomers') will either receive a talk page message that shows them their impact stats and encourages them to continue editing or a control message that does not include their impact stats. Only newcomers and edits that satisfy criteria within their community will be included in the study. We will look at newcomer retention as our primary outcome. Up to 15,000 newcomers will be included in the study.
Timeline edit
- August - September, 2020: Research design, in collaboration with liaisons in Bangla, German & Slovak Wikipedias.
- September - October, 2020: Research development
- October or November, 2020: Study launch
- February or March, 2021: Study completion
- Spring, 2021: Data collection, analysis and community debriefing
Policy, Ethics and Human Subjects Research edit
This study will be reviewed by Cornell's Institutional Review Board to ensure it complies with research ethics. The study will also be presented and discussed with Wikipedians in their public forums. Only if there is community consensus to conduct the study will we move forward.
