Use of the spam blacklist for purposes other than combatting spam consists of ideological censorship and enforcement of reliable sourcing policies. Meta-Wiki's blacklist contains a number of sites, such as Metapedia, that are blocked for political incorrectness rather than for spamminess. BoyChat has been on the English Wikipedia's blacklist since 2010, when Fox News reported there were a grand total of 12 external links to BoyChat. This number was confirmed by the Wikipedians; they also confirmed "All of the links appear in old talk archives or from project page discussions." Some sites, such as examiner.com, are blocked because they are considered unreliable sources that users should be prevented from adding to articles.
