It covers the Great Caucasus Mountains and lands on both sides, starting from the Anapa peninsula that separates the Black Sea and the eastern part of the Azov Sea, reaching the Apsheron peninsula on the Caspian Sea; the name comes from the mentioned mountain range. The republics of Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia are in the South Caucasus (Transcaucasia), the republics of Dagestan, Kalmuk, Karachay-Cherkessia, Kabardino-Balkar, Ingush, North Ossetia and Chechnya in the North Caucasus (Kafkasönü), which are affiliated with the Russian Federation.
