Language's item at WikidataEdit

Now that Meta has access to Wikidata, could this be added to the template? Ideally the item would include some relevant info. --Jura1 (talk) 13:48, 30 January 2016 (UTC)

Currently some of the information is repeated in the template and there isn't any easy way to ensure that this is consistent with Wikimedia Foundation's information on the language. Further, the specialists looking at the proposal are more likely to spot discrepancies in the data. Obviously, formatting could be improved. --Jura1 (talk) 22:44, 2 February 2016 (UTC)

The community needs to?Edit

Should additional logic be added to this template to suppress/reword the "The community needs to" messages once the wiki has actually been created? See, for example, Requests for new languages/Wikipedia Jamaican, where the notice at the top of the page still claims "The community needs to" do this and that, even though the wiki was created over a year ago. How would this best be accomplished? Perhaps allow the new value status=created? - dcljr (talk) 09:23, 2 July 2017 (UTC)

Phabricator link updatedEdit

Hello. I've done few amendments:

  • it now adds automatically the task as the tracking parent task of wikis waiting for creation
  • Shell is not a valid Phab project, it's been removed and also added some others required such as DBA
  • it now submits the task with Phabricator format in bulleted points.

This template asks for localized versions of the Project and Project_talk namespaces. Can we please ask for localization of all standard namespaces (at least for Wikipedias) before a request gets approved? (The names don't necessarily have to be different from English, if that's appropriate for the language/community.) As things stand, there is sometimes a lot of back and forth in Phabricator tasks, with sysadmins (which I am not, BTW) trying to get localizations of namespace names, when this information would more appropriately be collected upfront, when interested users are watching the "Requests…" subpage. - dcljr (talk) 00:22, 11 August 2017 (UTC)

In former times (tm) everything was better when TWN had a special page for translating the namespace names. I don't know why this desirable function was disabled. --MF-W 04:36, 12 August 2017 (UTC)
MF-Warburg Apparently they wanted to bundle the feature into the Translate extension, but they have not achieved that for now, plus the extension started to fail so they got it removed. Restoring the feature is not possible now since it'll require huge work to make it work with the newest MediaWiki versions. No, I mean the threshold for exporting translations from TWN into the MediaWiki code (13% of the core messages). It doesn't make sense to ask for namespace translations in languages that don't fulfill that yet, because those languages will be unknown to MediaWiki. --MF-W 16:50, 22 August 2017 (UTC)

This template links to wmf:Wikimedia official marks/Word mark creation for "instructions" (that's the link text) about project logos. Unfortunately, that page only talks about the Wikipedia logo(s) and not those of any other Wikimedia content projects (say, Wikibooks). After looking around the Foundation wiki and Commons for a bit, I couldn't actually find any specific information about how to either create new logos for non-Wikipedia wikis or even where to request that such a logo be created (unless it's just at commons:Commons:Picture requests, like any other image request). Can someone improve this template to point to useful info about creating or requesting non-WP logos? - dcljr (talk) 02:31, 14 August 2017 (UTC)

Also, I just noticed that we are suggesting a "135x135" logo, whereas the instructions at wmf:Wikimedia official marks/Word mark creation#Preparing files for upload say:
  1. Create a new file with these preferences:
    • width: 135px
    • height: 155px

mw:Manual:FAQ#How_do_I_change_the_logo.3F A good logo size is 135x135px or 150x150px. The maximum logo size in Vector is ~160x160px, while MonoBook's is ~155x155px. A logo that is too large will be cut off.
About the pages, I'd suggest that we create similar ones on Meta (or Commons) for the non-WP logos. We can also link to the picture request page from the template, for users' convenience. --MF-W 01:34, 17 August 2017 (UTC)

I don't see a contradiction between the two pages: most of our logos are not square (except Wikibooks and Wikiquote I guess) when the name is included. Clearer now? [2] [3]
Ideally the process should not require translators to learn graphics. If people who start a new language in incubator add their translations to User:Cbrown1023/Logos early, one of the usual suspects can create the logo well before it's needed. Nemo 07:10, 20 October 2017 (UTC)
Those additions to the instructions look very helpful, Nemo. Thanks. (I've expanded on what you changed to make the possibility of using a non-square logo explicit, lest anyone else be confused about that.) But I'm still not clear on the steps users should follow to get a new logo created. Are you saying we should tell users of this template to add the relevant info to User:Cbrown1023/Logos and wait for someone to create the logo? How long does that typically take? Lint errorEdit

This template seems to be causing a "Missing end tag" Lint error, but I can't find where it's happening. (BTW, not only does this template page have the error but "Requests…" subpages using this template seem to all have the same type of error while subpages that don't use this template don't seem to have the error.) I suspect it may be due to a block-level element being opened and closed inside of an inline-level element, since there are equal numbers of open- and close-tags in the rendered HTML (of this template page) and the tags seem to be properly nested, AFAICT (ignoring the "level" aspect of each element). Can someone find the problem? I know this is a minor issue, but it's bugging me. - dcljr (talk) 22:37, 21 August 2017 (UTC)

MF-Warburg just reverted this change. I had reworded that part because it's ambiguous, since "the wiki" doesn't exist yet if they are using {{New wiki request}}. Should it then say "if you are an active contributor to the test wiki"? - dcljr (talk) 20:22, 27 September 2017 (UTC)
