- The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
- The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
- The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:
What | Value | Example / Explanation |
---|
Proposal | ||
---|---|---|
Language code | {} (SIL, Glottolog) | A valid ISO 639-1 or 639-3 language code, like "fr", "de", "nso", ... |
Language name | {} | Language name in English |
Language name | English | Language name in your language. This will appear in the language list on Special:Preferences, in the interwiki sidebar on other wikis, ... |
Language Wikidata item | please add | language_Wikidata= (search)
|
Item about the language at Wikidata. It would normally include the Wikimedia language code, name of the language, etc. Please complete at Wikidata if needed. |
Directionality | no indication | Is the language written from left to right (LTR) or from right to left (RTL)? |
Site URL | {}.{}.org | langcode.wikiproject.org |
Settings | ||
---|---|---|
Project name | {} | "Wikiproject" in your language |
Project namespace | {} | usually the same as the project name |
Project talk namespace | {} | "Wikiproject talk" (the discussion namespace of the project namespace) |
Enable uploads | yes/no/admin | Default is "no". Preferably, files should be uploaded to Commons. If you want, you can enable local file uploading, either by any user ("yes") or by administrators only ("admin").
Notes: (1) This setting can be changed afterwards. The setting can only be "yes" or "admin" at approval if the test creates an Exemption Doctrine Policy (EDP) first. (2) Files on Commons can be used on all Wikis. (3) Uploading fair-use images is not allowed on Commons (more info). (4) Localisation to your language may be insufficient on Commons. |
Optional settings | ||
Project logo | This needs to be an SVG image (instructions for logo creation). | |
Default project timezone | "Continent/City", e.g. "Europe/Brussels" or "America/Mexico City" (see list of valid timezones) | |
Additional namespaces | For example, a Wikisource would need "Page", "Page talk", "Index", "Index talk", "Author", "Author talk". | |
Additional settings | Anything else that should be set | |
This is the template sandbox page for Template:New wiki request (diff). |
Usage
editThis template is used on requests for new wikis, to give information about the language and the subdomain settings. Use this example:

Additional notes
- "new_language" is whether it is a completely new language for Wikimedia (i.e. there is not yet a project in this language), usually when creating a new Wikipedia.
- "language_native" is actually only needed when "new_language" is "yes"
Optional:
- "url" to override the default site URL
- "interfacelang" if it is different from the subdomain
- A link to Phabricator (with the settings pre-filled) is added when the status is set to approved
- "phab" can be used to replace the link described in the previous item by a normal link to the existing Phabricator task
- For Wikisource and Wikiversity, use "category" and maybe also "main_page"
- Optional parameters "community" and "links" for converting old proposals
Some simple words or short sentences are translatable on Template:New wiki request/translation.
No description.
Parameter | Description | Type | Status | |
---|---|---|---|---|
Status of request | status | Status of the request. Only members of the Language Committee should change the value of this parameter.
| Line | required |
Language Committee comment | comment | A comment from the Language Committee. Only members of the Language Committee should provide a value for this parameter. (This can be used to link to the Phabricator task requesting creation of the wiki, once that task exists.) | Line | suggested |
Phabricator task | phab | The Phabricator task number, once that task has been created. (This hides the link to create the Phabricator task and replaces it with a normal link to the existing task. The longer parameter name "phabricator" can also be used.)
| Line | suggested |
Language code (subdomain) | language_code | The ISO 639 two- or three-letter code for the language. This will be used as the subdomain for the wiki.
| Line | required |
Three-letter language code | language_code3 | Add this if the language has both two- and three-letter language codes.
| Line | optional |
Wiki language name in English | language_English | The language of the wiki in English. This is almost always the name of the English Wikipedia article about the language without the word "language". For example, the English Wikipedia article about French is "French language", so the value here for a French wiki would be "French".
| Line | suggested |
English Wikipedia article title | wtitle | Use this to specify the title of the English Wikipedia article about the language if that title is not simply the value of language_English plus the word "language". | Line | optional |
Wiki language name for itself (local or native name) | language_native | The name of the language of the wiki in the language itself.
| Line | required |
Wikidata item for wiki language | language_Wikidata | The item number at Wikidata for the language of the wiki.
| Line | suggested |
New language? | new_language | Is this the first Wikimedia wiki to be created for this language? (Usually yes if this is a Wikipedia and no otherwise, but not always.)
| Line | required |
Directionality | directionality | The direction the language is written in (left-to-right, etc.).
| Line | suggested |
Content project name in English | project_English | The name of the Wikimedia content project the wiki will be a part of.
| Line | required |
Content project name in wiki language | project_native | The name of the Wikimedia content project in the language of the wiki. If not provided, the English name (project_English) will be used. (The example here is "Wikipedia" in French.)
| Line | suggested |
Project namespace | ns_project | The name of the project namespace in the language of the wiki. Usually this matches project_native, but not always. If not provided, the default English name (project_English) will be used.
| Line | suggested |
Project talk namespace | ns_project_talk | The name of the talk/discussion namespace associated with the project namespace. If not provided, the default English name (project_English plus the word "talk") will be used.
| Line | suggested |
Enable uploads? | enable_upload | Should uploads be allowed? Usually this is no, and files should be uploaded to Commons instead of locally on the wiki. Specifying yes (anyone can upload) or admin (only administrators/sysops can) requires that an Exemption Doctrine Policy (EDP) be created first. A "no" setting here can always be changed later.
| Line | suggested |
Logo | logo | An SVG file containing the logo to be shown in the upper-left corner of every wiki page. This should be a file uploaded to Commons.
| Line | suggested |
Time zone | timezone | The time zone to be used by the wiki. Must be a valid time zone identifier from the "tz database".
| Line | suggested |
Additional namespaces | add_namespaces | Any additional namespaces required for the wiki. For example, a Wikisource would need local equivalents of "Page", "Page talk", "Index", "Index talk", "Author", "Author talk".
| Line | optional |
Additional settings | add_settings | Any additional settings for the wiki. | Line | optional |
Category | category | For a Wikisource or Wikiversity, the category of the test wiki on the Multilingual Wikisource or Wikiversiy Beta. (Otherwise the test wiki is assumed to be in the Wikimedia Incubator.) | Line | optional |
main_page | main_page | no description | Unknown | optional |
interfacelang | interfacelang | no description | Unknown | optional |
community | community | no description | Unknown | optional |
links | links | no description | Unknown | optional |
