Hawaiian
editQuestionnaire
editContributors
edit- Wikimedia Statistics can be difficult to interpret. What is your impression, how many steady contributors do you have?
- Including myself, two regular contributors. There is a third that pops in occasionally to write. —Kal (talk) 08:44, 24 September 2008 (UTC)
- Currently there are three steady contributors, two who can write, one who helps out, and all edit when they find the time. Singularity 19:18, 3 May 2009 (UTC)
- Are your contributors mostly native speakers?
- No. There are very few native speakers of Hawaiian remaining, and all are elderly. But a new generation of speakers is being raised; most will be bilingual in Hawaiian and English. However, there is a good number of people who have achieved fluency already, but none of them contribute. —Kal (talk) 08:44, 24 September 2008 (UTC)
- Where do your contributors live (regions/country)?
- The two regular contributors both live in Hawaiʻi. —Kal (talk) 08:44, 24 September 2008 (UTC)
- How common is it that your contributors meet in real life?
- The two regular contributors have never met. —Kal (talk) 08:44, 24 September 2008 (UTC)
Other Wikipedias
edit- Do you have special contacts with other Wikipedias (maybe in related languages)?
- I do not. —Kal (talk) 08:44, 24 September 2008 (UTC)
- Do you translate a lot from other Wikipedias? Which ones?
- I always use the English Wikipedia as a basis for translation. —Kal (talk) 08:44, 24 September 2008 (UTC)
Organization and support
edit- Is there a Wikimedia chapter in your country? How does your language relate to it?
- There's no chapter in Hawai'i. Singularity 03:14, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
- Are there work groups in other organizations about Wikipedia?
- Not currently; the Hawaiian Wikipedia is still very young. Singularity 03:14, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
Your Wikipedia and the linguistic community
edit- Is there a language institution for your language, like an Academy, or a club of people interested in your language? Do you have contact with them?
- As far as I know, only two educational institutions in Hawaiʻi, Kamehameha Schools and the University of Hawaiʻi, offer complete courses in Hawaiian. Kamehameha students may enroll in up to five years of study, while UH offers a master's program. I have some contact with Kamehameha students and teachers. —Kal (talk) 08:44, 24 September 2008 (UTC)
- Who (else) supports you?
- What does the public outreach for your edition look like? Do you have fliers, give lectures, training etc.?
- There are no apparent efforts to invite others to contribute. —Kal (talk) 08:44, 24 September 2008 (UTC)
- I have made some efforts on the English Wikipedia (via WikiProject Hawaii) to invite users and bring interest to the Hawaiian Wikipedia, although not much has resulted, since speakers likely have little knowledge of this Wikipedia. However, there is a lot of potential in outreach and growth. Singularity 03:27, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
- There are no apparent efforts to invite others to contribute. —Kal (talk) 08:44, 24 September 2008 (UTC)
- Do you get feedback from readers?
- There is little feedback, let alone any viewership.
- What other encyclopedias exist in your language?
Content
edit- Does your edition concentrate on certain topics, like your region and language, or Latin Wikipedia on Roman history and Christianity?
- At the moment no, but I aim to focus more on Hawaiian topics, especially places, history, and culture. —Kal (talk) 08:44, 24 September 2008 (UTC)
- Did your edition enjoy text donations, for example from older encyclopedias?
Language
edit- Is there a generally accepted norm about your language (spelling, dictionary, pronunciation)?
- Yes. haw:Nā lula kupela are guidelines regarding standardized spelling as proposed by ʻAhahui ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi in the 1970s. The standard Hawaiian dictionaries are Hawaiian Dictionary by Pukui and Elbert and Māmaka Kaiao. Some issues arise with using foreign letters, but in general, we try to use standard Hawaiian spelling and stick to the translations the dictionaries provide. —Kal (talk) 08:44, 24 September 2008 (UTC)
- How do you deal with different spellings, dialects etc. (like B.E. lift and A.E. elevator)?
