Some thoughts
editI know this bid is in its early stages, but some early feedback can be helpful to organizers. Some thoughts that come to my mind include:
- The location looks very attractive and I do like the care taken on providing hints-and-tips for visitors.
- There is always a desire to rotate Wikimania around the world every year. Bukittinggi is hardly a drive down the road from Hong Kong, but is it far away enough?
- The majority of attendees will be arriving by plane - last year's bid was in Surakarta, which had its own airport, even if a transfer was required for longhaul flights. The fact that Bukittinggi doesn't, with the nearest airport being two hours away, I think is currently the biggest shortcoming of this bid. In 2011, Wikimania was hosted in Haifa, Israel which was some way from the nearest airport in Tel Aviv, but there were good transport connections and the airport had a good selection of long-haul flights. The bid says taxis are not recommended, but will this be the only option other than renting a car (which I doubt will very popular)?
- Entering the country itself seems to be very straightforward (visas not generally being required e.t.c.), which is a big plus.
- All Wikimanias in recent years have made use of dormitories or similar to house scholarship recipients and those on a low budget. Does anything like this exist in Bukittinggi? The prices quoted for the budget hotels do seem very reasonable, which is a good sign, but do these hotels have the required capacity which Wikimania will demand?
- Any ideas with the venue? A place with a big auditorium and rooms to break out in is essential - so might be air conditioning.
Best of luck with the bid. CT Cooper · talk 17:55, 1 January 2013 (UTC)
