Where are we?
editJust wanted to ask - any more progress on anyone's front? I'll be finished this dissertation (at last) next week so can give a bit of time then. I could go to Salford uni or talk to my lecturers in Manchester uni about who to talk to about sponsorship etc. - as well as get on the phone. Oh, and find out about wireless too. - My pet idea was to use a university - but after discovering that universities (at least all I know of) use the JANET network for internet access, and that's not usable for non-HE purposes, that kinda put the kybosh on the idea :-(. Dan100 16:20, 7 September 2005 (UTC)
- I have used JANET over the years, working on several Internet WAN projects. I have also been around a few UKERNA and JANET committees over the years. See below for more thought LoopZilla 13:06, 14 September 2005 (UTC)
East London bid - new venue.
editI have moved the venue from UEL (University of East London) to Queen Mary College. More details to follow! LoopZilla 13:29, 8 September 2005 (UTC)
East London.
editI have now a very clear picture of the proposal for "Queen Mary". The only issue remains the Internet access, via JANET. There are many alternatives in London, such as [Consume] which would allow us to sidestep JANET.
However, I have spoken to the Computer Services Department who manage the networks, and they will respond shortly. And I don't see why we cannot be accredited as an "higher educational organiazation". If we could incorporate the "UK Chapter" within the next few weeks, we could make a very strong case to be a "bona fide" educational structure, part of an international body of high standing. This would be in advance of "charity status" etc. LoopZilla 13:03, 14 September 2005 (UTC)
- Yes - or Wikiversity also.. Cormaggio @ 13:23, 15 September 2005 (UTC)
I presume the rates quoted are (effectively) rack rates, thus might reduce to some extent depending on how many rooms/facilities actually in use. Re the OU usage, althuogh I haven't been on a school there I was the OUSA exec member for London and general feedback was that it was a pleasant location, altohugh the food sometimes left something to be desired (but this was a while ago so ymmv ...). Cetainly access is easy and simple, the area has easy access to central London (for extra-curricular and pre/post activities!) and world access is very easy with four international airports plus Eurostar. --VampWillow 23:02, 15 September 2005 (UTC)
- I am not sure on the rates, but I will ask now. I will add a not about the aiports: Stanstead is also very easy LoopZilla 06:43, 16 September 2005 (UTC)
