As a kid, art wasn’t really my thing. But Keith Haring was. Oh, I loved him. Mostly because of his abstractness that meant something so important to one person but useless to the next. That was the thing about Keith Haring. He and his popularity were focused around two things. 1, was the gay community. If you were in the “know” about gay culture and/or supported it, you knew Keith Haring. It didn't mean you liked him, but you knew him. Second, he was a person to aspire to. He was an activist through his art, much like many other famous painters. Now, one of the Met pieces by Keith Haring isn’t titled. And It's not currently displayed, according to the Met website. I can’t really describe it, it would take too much time and it is very hard to describe, but I can tell you that it was painted in 1983. While the AIDS epidemic of the 80s is more shutters and closed doors when it comes to teaching about it, Keith Haring did not stay quiet. He spoke out through his art, along with many other LGBT activists. His paintings were sort of shining light in the darkness to some. Keith herring isn’t a household name like it should be, and we should change that. Keith herring is an important figure in LGBT history and activism. Because a lot of people don’t exactly know who Keith Haring is, I will give some context. Keith Haring was born in 1958 in Pennsylvania. In late 1978, he moved to NY and enrolled in SVA (School of Visual Arts). At one point, he started to draw with white chalk on unused advertising panels in the subway station. Between 1980-1989, he became internationally famous for his work. In 1986, Haring opened up a shop called the Pop Shop that sold T-shirts, posters, buttons, and toys. Throughout his unfairly short career, he dedicated much of his time to public works which would most likely carry a social message. In 1988, Haring was diagnosed with AIDS. The following year he created the Keith Haring Foundation, its goal is to provide funding AIDS organizations and children’s programs.
