What is the benefit of having this on a separate wiki? Why wouldn't timelines just stay in their relevant articles are they now on Wikipedia? Angela 23:16, 5 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

In my opinion a benefit would be that you can see how the events are related to each other. You know, I always found it difficult to remember things like "was Napoleon in before or after the french revolution" as long as you are only hearing or reading their beginning and end dates. It's a hole different story if you can see both of them on a timeline! You can now imagine how different events relate to each other in terms of timelines. Since such a wiki has dynamic content, it is possible for you to compare every event with any other event, as for the EasyTimeline you are stuck with that graphic. Also, since dates are stored separate, you can make comparisons/calculations like how many days after that one started the other event or how long lasted an event and so on. There is a hole new world opening up if you store the dates separate from the text! But still, the main benefit I think is the dynamic content. Just click a bit around on http://www.wikitimescale.org and you will see what I mean. It's no comparison to EasyTimeline... beside that, EasyTimeline is very complicated and hardly used in Wikipedia. Just a tip, I don't know if it's obvious: Click onto the timelines at WikiTimeScale, the Graph is interactive, so you can play around a bit... DontPanic 02:09, 6 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Simile Timeline

edit

This may also be worth taking a look at. It's a project from the Simile Lab at MIT.

Simile Timeline

That Simile Timeline is truely a nice project. Sadly its not a wiki and this timeline is hard to implement into WikiTimeScale because the displaying of the Timelines changes in WikiTimeScale completly if you move just a bit in time (because of the ordered by clausel). Because of that it is not possible to implement an AJAX interface that needs to know how the timelines of the next years will look like. Also, there are quite sure more events in the viewed time periode than can be displayed. This problem needs a 2nd dimension (not only left/right but up/down) which is not implemented into this AJAX interface. WikiTimeScale tries to satisfy the needs of the users by implementing an overview resembling a bit the one of this AJAX interface at the bottom of the Timelines. Zooming and moving of the timeframe is interactivly possible due to Javascript in WikiTimeScale, but WikiTimeScale will always need a refresh if the From/To Date has changed, in contrast to the Simile Timeline. As explained, this is due to logistic problems. DontPanic 10:00, 28 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Is there anyone intending to integrat the WikiTimeScale into phpBB or Wikipedia

edit

WikiTimeScale is a nice site to creat timelines, compared with Wikipedia, that's its strong point and it seems to harmony with Mediawiki nicely.

If it could shared with phpBB's user-table in MySQL, such like Wikipedia, that would be a nice thing for one who want to deal with knowledgemanagement.

So I hope my wish can be ture.

At the moment, no-one is working on WikiTimeScale using PhpBB users. WikiTimeScale is using its own user-table in the original version and at the moment there are only a few forked versions out there and to my knowledge none of them are eather using the PhpBB user-database nor are they made avaliable for the public (one is in use at the UCLA, the others are in private hand).
