Why just advocates? edit

Yes, wikimedians are under threat in many countries. and yes we need to do something about that. But why just advocates? WereSpielChequers (talk) 05:03, 26 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

  • WereSpielChequers I guess, because this is a recommendation by Advocacy group. This is what they focus on. They may raise this issue in discussions between working groups and make it a "meta-recommendation" proposal ("meta-recommendation" is one that clusters recommendations by more of one working group). Do you think they should? SGrabarczuk (WMF) (talk) 08:39, 26 September 2019 (UTC)Reply
    • Hi SGrabarczuk (WMF) In my own experience, once you as a Wikipedian get involved in real life activities it becomes difficult to retain the advantages of pseudonymity, so I wouldn't comment if they had asserted that advocates are at greater risk of being identified. But the current proposal seems to imply greater efforts should be made to protect advocates than others. I could make the case that we should be most concerned at checkusers and crats being put under pressure; But yes, I would be OK if they conferred with other strategy groups and either made this a meta recommendation or just broadened their recommendation. • Hi SGrabarczuk (WMF) I agree this needs to be broadened to include people active within the wiki community. Otherwise it suggests advocates get special status over and above other people involved, such as many editors who have devoted thousands of hours improving various wikiprojects. Yes, advocacy by nature is more public but this is not always the case. Some editors have a higher profile and some advocates may have quite a low profile. • Hello WereSpielChequers and Casliber - thank you for asking this question about this recommendation. I am answering on behalf of the Advocacy Working Group ... SGrabarczuk (WMF) is correct. This only pertains to Advocacy activists because that is the focus of our working group. We in no way wish to privilege advocacy activists or actors over any other volunteer. All volunteers should be protected if they are working in unsafe or potentially threatening environments, and we raised this recommendation with the hope that it would be part of a meta recommendation for all Wikimedians (that would additionally take the challenges of advocacy roles into account).
