Wikimedia edit

WikiMedia.org was originally mentioned by mav as the common place of Wikipedia media (images, audio, video?). But somehow the name WikiMedia became that of the foundation. Not sure what happened.

I absolutely support this idea. I really hate transfer English WP images to Chinese WP, when a machine could do my job. Tedious and time-consuming. --Menchi 07:48, 28 Oct 2003 (UTC)

This has been suggested a few times before (although not with this domain name), and is widely considered to be a good idea. Someone just has to code it. An alternate possible implementation would be to allow the image table to refer to images on arbitrary wikis. UI: maybe a new special page where you could type in a specification such as fr:Test.png and click the "link" button. The local name could be different to the foreign name, without any significant development overhead. -- Tim Starling 08:29, 28 Oct 2003 (UTC)

DomainName WikiImages.org edit

I just registered WikiImages.org, just in case we decide to use it. If someone has a better proposal for the domain-name, please let us know! If we are going to use WikiImages.org, I will transfer the domain to Wikimedia Fondation (as soon as I find out how a domain-transfer works ;-) Fantasy 15:45, 28 Oct 2003 (UTC)

Please, not another domain name for Wikimedia to have to pay yearly for and assign yet antother IP to. If anything, this would be a subdomain of Wikimedia.org since it would not be a project in itself, but a subproject that serves the Wikimedia community (like meta). Hm. Meta's image upload utility could even be used as a central repository; all the current images would just be moved here. Then "image:" and its translations would be pointed to meta. No need even for a separate subproject. --Maveric149 16:32, 28 Oct 2003 (UTC)
We don't have to use it. It is just a proposal. You are right, a subdomain would do it as well, and we would save fees. Sorry for not thinking of it in the first place. I am not so interrested in the domainname, what I am really looking for is a solution to the current Images-situation :-) Fantasy 07:24, 29 Oct 2003 (UTC)
Well- you don't need an extra ip for it and .org costs less than 10€ per year- not that bad really. -- Gwicke 22:53, 26 Jan 2004 (UTC)

WikiFiles edit

Can we please make everything relate to files instead of images if this proposal gets done? It's already bad that we have to deal with Image:sound.ogg. It would be much harder to fix things after it gets established. Dori | Talk 03:33, 14 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Yep. 100% agreement from the mavster. --Maveric149 03:53, 14 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Interlinking images edit

Moved from w:Wikipedia:Village Pump

Is there any consensus (or has any discussion taken place) regarding inter-language linking of images that are taken from one language wikipedia and uploaded to another? --snoyes 17:46, 13 Dec 2003 (UTC)

I'm not sure what you mean. Like this? --Brion 01:16, 14 Dec 2003 (UTC)
Yip, that's what I meant. I just don't see it done all that much, I suppose it would be a good idea to make a habit of linking them though. --snoyes 01:23, 14 Dec 2003 (UTC)
Well, you really should if you took it from another language. Acknowledgement/attribution of the source would be ideal. On an unrelated matter, it's fun to see how the labels get changed around (as in the case of that map). But I guess if it's Anthere's w:eyes -- that's little point to interlinking extensively (beside the source lang), because people aren't gonna change her eye colours or anything. So they are just clones. --Menchi (Talk)â 02:49, 14 Dec 2003 (UTC)
I was asking because I transferred a whole bunch of maps from the french wikipedia (eg. w:Image:Carte Localisation Région France Alsace.png). As you can see, I'm too lazy to change the file names. Anyhow, thanks for the answers. --snoyes 03:02, 14 Dec 2003 (UTC)
That is model attribution. I personally don't think "Credit(s): fr:Utilisateur:Rinaldum" is necessary (although certainly not bad), because you can just click on ther interlink and find out immediately. Maybe GNU requires it, but I don't know (I almost never did that!). I guess it'd be helpful if French WP got sucked in le black hôle one day and we're left with no functional interlink. --Menchi (Talk)â 03:10, 14 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Did you enjoy that fantastique process of download-wait-upload-wait-describe-link? m:WikiImages.org is some Wikipedians' ideas that you may find interesting, or boring. --Menchi (Talk)â 03:14, 14 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Hey, at least I get an easy boost to my number of edits. OK, ok it is not actually worth it ;-) &mdash I've always been an advocate for a centralised image database (and a centralised inter-language links database aswell). As someone on a mailinglist mentioned recently: Wikipedia is a codocracy (or was it "codeocracy"). I can't really code, and I don't feel like badgering the developers. --snoyes 03:23, 14 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Domain name edit

WikiImages.org seems not a good domain for me. Wikimages may be better. Please avoid double letters. But, will it host only images? what about sould files? why not Wikifiles.org ??? Optim 09:25, 26 Jan 2004 (PST)
