Case studies edit

Can I suggest using the Swine flu outbreak as a case study? This saw an article being written from scratch (en:2009 swine flu outbreak), the expansion of an existing page (en:Swine flu) and the improvement of an existing featured article (en:Influenza). This could showcase some of our best content, is relevant to public health and biosciences, and shows the ability of Wikipedia to reach huge numbers of the public with up-to-date information. Yes, that's a great idea! I'll send a short note to the mailinglist (as not all of us might have this page on their watchlist). By the way: We also need to find a timeslot for you to present the results of Michael's and your study. Any suggestions? --Frank Schulenburg 16:22, 22 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
That would fit best under "motivation" as it deals with why Wiki is so important. I could then move *seamlessly* :) from the results of our historical study to the influenza case study, which would bring the dicussion right up to date. TimVickers 16:30, 22 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Inspiring young scientists edit

One powerful reason to edit Wikipedia, I think, is to inspire young people to become scientists. One of the more interesting collaborations I have seen to this effect is at en:Quark). The FA push was largely begun by (I think) en:User:Anonymous Dissident), who I believe is about 14 years old, but the article is being refined by a group of editors, among whom is en:User:Markus Poessel, a physicist at the Max Planck Institute (he contributed significantly to the featured articles en:Introduction to general relativity and en:General relativity). The chance for real scientists to teach willing and able students, who will be the scientists of the future, does exist on Wikipedia. (I know teaching is a secondary interest to research, but perhaps it does deserve a passing mention!) Awadewit 14:55, 25 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

New Schedule edit

Since we have several different presentation styles and strengths we'll need to intentionally set tone and manage flow. The revisions are intended to go with: Inspiration; focus on common mission; understanding of Wikipedia culture; Persuasion - people use WP to access health info; Basics - general how to approach editing - what it is to edit; Basics - what are the big picture systems of internal policing and governance -> Afternoon: focus on skills building at differing levels.Jennifer Riggs 17:50, 2 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

If 10:00am - 10:45am is to be a coffee break, which might not be the best place (right after the introduction) could we shrink it to 10:00am - 10:30am? Then I could have 30 min for talk and discussion. TimVickers 20:37, 2 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
