Results from Strategy Lunch at Wikimania 2024

edit

A lunchtime session was held at Wikimania with about 50 attendees, to discuss how individual Wikimedians see selected strategic initiatives. They were asked "What is happening now to support this strategic initiative? What do you want to do that will support this strategic initiative?"

One discussed strategic initiative was: Mitigating misinformation

The participants (three tables) identified the following

Happening now

  • Revert risk AI model is now available in all languages
  • Work happening around elections
  • WMEU funding for anti-misinformation (Gulbenkian Foundation)
  • Advocacy at local levels
  • Educating people on developing media and information literacy skills
  • At a project level, bot for page protection, looking up partners

What we can do

  • Anti-disinformation repository on Meta/Diff
    • Aggregated list of everything being done in the Movement
  • Need to co-ordinate better and learn from each other globally, not just on a project or inter-project level
  • WMEU might become a centre of excelence
  • Share more information for debunking it (but internally?)
  • Have a clear process on curating sources and sharing then across languages. Spreading the practice topic by topic
  • Better sharing of pointers on fact-checking
  • Exchange information about patrolling and tools already in place for your community
  • Create and maintain a list of topics that may be a target of disinformation
  • Onboard more volunteers
