Citenews

It'd be helpful if this supported the Citenews template. The "News on a website" format would work except for the mandatory URL. Will Beback 21:36, 27 September 2008 (UTC)

A reference for a newspaper should also include the place of publication, Can this be added? By the way, "The London Times" (the example given) is incorrect. It should be "The Times (London)". In other words, the title of the newspaper needs to be in italics, the place of publication in non-italics but in brackets (obviously the latter is necessary only when the place of publication is not part of the title). 80.44.239.90 08:39, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

Date formats

At least for en.wikipedia, this needs to stop using ISO dates (yyyy-mm-dd); the current Manual of Style advice is to use the date format used elsewhere in the article (i.e., use the international default of "D[D] Monthname YYYY", or if the article is in American English, use "Monthname D[D], YYYY" US style. — SMcCandlish [talk] [cont] ‹(-¿-)› 00:12, 6 February 2010 (UTC)

Full parameters for books, and other sources

I've coded the full params for books - see a volume book at the en.WP of Brachiopod. I also know some Web sites are published by the same publishers, e.g. about video games, and these sites should be works. This suggests also that all types of sources should be reviewed to seen what the full params should be included. Is there more efficient process that just repeating the same params in each type of sources? Note: you'll get a faster response from my en.WP Talk page--Philcha 14:13, 28 May 2010 (UTC)

I've changed last4, first4 and authorlink4 to the pattern of the rest - the Harvard citation templates used at en.WP change last4 to et al. Please do not more add sets (5 or higher), as the Harvard citation templates cannot cope with more. --Philcha 07:49, 30 May 2010 (UTC)

Court reports

USA state court cases are reported as e.g. 2007 NE 12345 (year, state code, number) - see Neutral Citation, Court Web Sites, and Access to Authoritative Case Law. Additional codes are needed for:

• Nation. I suggest using the upper-case, 2 letter code used for nation code, e.g. US, and the other nations will know the ones they use more often.
• Level, e.g. up to Supreme Court or equivalents (e.g. UK Law Lords).
• Legal system, e.g. criminal or civil.

Broken PMID and DOI identifiers now fixed

Between 6 July 2013 and 20 March 2014, the PMID and DOI identifiers generated within citation and cite journal templates were malformed.

This problem has now been fixed.

Between 6 July 2013 and 20 March 2014, filling in the trans_title parameter on the cite web form input did not result in the data appearing in the generated template. The data was lost.

Between 13 August 2007 and 23 March 2014, filling in the id parameter on the cite book form input did not result in the data appearing in the generated template. The data was lost.

Between 28 May 2010 and 23 March 2014, filling in the doi parameter on the cite book form input resulted in the DOI data appearing in the id parameter value in the generated template. Additionally, no doi parameter was created.

These problems have now been fixed.

Change requests II

References with an ID or name <ref name="xyz-123">...</ref> are very easy to re-use within the same article. It's a simple case of copying the opening <ref name="xyz-123">, pasting it where required and adding a closing slash, e.g. <ref name="xyz-123" />.

MakeRef has an option to fill in a reference name but many editors don't bother doing so. This creates extra work for someone wanting to re-use a reference as they first have to make up a name for it. I would therefore like to suggest some simple functionality that automatically creates a name if that form field is left blank.

Some suggestions on automatically creating a name:

For a news item with URL, extract the domain name and article number e.g. www.example.com/news/345890.some_story_title leads to <ref name="example.345890">...</ref>

If there is no article number, try extracting a date from the URL, e.g. www.example.com/news/2012/sep/14/some_story_title leads to <ref name="example.2012sep14">...</ref>

If there is nothing usable in the URL, try extracting something from the publication date form field, or else generate a random number.

For a news item without URL, extract the name of the publication and the publishing date or the page number and use those.

For a journal, extract the journal name, volume and page. Take the initial letters of the journal name and add the volume and page after, e.g. for an item in "Nature" use "n.2014.54". If there is no volume information use the publication year or date. If none of that is present, use the PMID or PMC ID if present, or else the initial letters of the publication name followed by the final few digits of the DOI, else generate a short random number, e.g. "n.357533".

For an ordinary website, extract the domain name and add to it either part of the page name (especially of there are digits present) or a random number, e.g. "nasa.424433".

If there is nothing easily usable from the input data, just make up a completely random name, e.g. "ref_6F32BA5227".

If people don't like the suggested name they can always amend it once pasted into the article or they can create their own unique name for each reference they are creating, next time they use the tool. -- 79.67.241.201 09:37, 28 April 2014 (UTC)

I formerly was able to click into a site to make a good-looking and properly-formated cite reference for Wikipedia. Can't find it any longer, and searches only got me to this page.
