Related languages edit
I pimp this everywhere. But for closely related languages, there is the Apertium machine transation architecture. At the moment they have pairs for Spanish <-> {Catalan, Galician, Portuguese, Occitan}. New pairs may be created fairly easily. The software has support for building morphological dictionaries, pos taggers, and limited transfer rules. - Hi Francis. Apertium is not much use for our Native Languages, it does not deal well with polysynthetic languages well since it just basically does word swapping and very little link grammar classification or decomposition. It also does not have a high level of MediaWiki integration at present. Jmerkey 19:42, 21 September 2006 (UTC)
- Hi Jmerkey; I just wanted to mention that one can now use more complex morphological analysers like HFST/SFST/foma (which together form free and open source implementations of the Xerox tools lexc, twolc, xfst) with Apertium. Additionally, several language pairs now use en:Constraint Grammar disambiguators, and we are working on using the dependency tree annotations from CG in the transfer step, essentially giving us dependency-based reordering. A lot of things have happened in the last three years ;-) However, we still do need work on the MediaWiki integration. The beginnings of a deformatter for MediaWiki are in the Apertium SVN (try "apertium -f wikimedia" if you have it installed), but of course that's not enough. Kiwibird 20:02, 13 November 2009 (UTC)
