This needs a lot more context. What is this about? and who is requesting this? I don't think the person who wrote this knows enough about WM-IRC relation to comment on any of this stuff. That seems like an unnecessarily resistent response. I completely disagree that no one is interested in this. I created this page after talking with freenode staff, WMF ops, and other WM developers. If you're not interested in the conversation - do not engage in it, but I'm tired of nay sayers just calling for ends to discussion simply because it didn't originate from them or meet their personal litmus test. Hi Varnent. First, By calling this "unnecessarily resistent" you seem to be singling me out, as if I'm the only one objecting. As far as I can read your entire proposal page is filled with nothing but questions, and opposes from every op I know. Yes, I was not present for the conversations you've had with the freenode staff, neither were many others, but I'm still an IRC op, and I only share the opinion expressed by other ops so far. While I believe you have talked with the freenode staff, I don't think you spent enough time talking to the ops, or understanding the structure there.

I don't know if you are currently an IRC op or Freenode staff, I have not seen you in the ops channel, so please forgive my assumption in considering you as neither. If I'm wrong, please correct me. From what I recall, most of the listed Freenode staff are/were unpaid volunteers located all over the world who help out. I don't know if this changed. What I do know is that PDPC, the non-profit that runs freenode is based in the UK. They were trying to raise £5,000 in their last fundraiser to achieve Charitable status in the UK. They still accept donations directly, and offer a cloak for their benefactors. Now, my point is, the staff that you assume were speaking on behalf of PDPC are probably volunteers located all over the world. The organization in charge of Freenode might not even be aware of that conversation. PDPC is different, If they want something, they should contact WMF directly. We are community members, not staff, WMF knows about the IRC and PDPC, there is little that requires going through us for support from WMF.

Now, I didn't mean to sound harsh earlier, if I did I apologize, because I know you mean well, but I am just trying to suggest with all the things that need attention, I think there a lot of good causes that you can take up than something that has no problem to begin with. I appreciate the comments, but I was not the one that created this page, so I am not sure it was my cause to take on. However, that said, I am confident I have a fairly good understanding of freenode and WM's IRC setup. I am also confident that I can both chew gum and walk at the same time - I agree that there are many issues in need of attention - and I give what time and skills I can to many of them. A quick check of my contributions will show that. I remain unclear why WMF's supporting freenode or dialogue between the two organizations is a bad idea - which means I am pretty unconvinced that it is not worth time or worth advocacy.
