Indexing of new media formats

edit

Interesting, it's important research. if we offered visual article summaries generated from Wikipedia articles as an alternative reading experience for younger readers and have them indexed by external platforms (Google, Tiktok) Google and other search engines like DuckDuckGo still do not index nearly all media on Wikimedia Commons including all videos. I think doing something about that would be step 1 (before e.g. improving the audio & video players) – see Community Wishlist/Wishes/Do something about Google & DuckDuckGo search not indexing media files and categories on Commons.

Also a note: I experimented with creating monthly infographics and videos that summarize a section on Wikipedia of a type well suited for such formats. I found few people click any Wikipedia links. So it may not lead to more people actually coming here, just indirectly getting in minor contact with it or info on Wikipedia being relayed this way. This could be something worth considering and of course some interested people do go to the page by checking the link(s) that is usually in the comment section (also note that many viewers won't go to the comments).
There's lots of things that could be done to make Wikimedia a more multimedia system but it depends on getting pages be actually discoverable. Prototyperspective (talk) 17:15, 15 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
