Translation phase questions (phase completed) edit

Last year's failed effort

Rand, do you think it would be helpful if you were more proactive in reporting back to us why you think the 2009 effort to field a Fundraising Survey (work began in July 2009, if I recall) utterly failed to issue anything before the end of 2009? What measures will we put in place in 2010 to help assure that we don't simply repeat last year's fiasco? -- Thekohser 17:07, 16 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Free Content

Rand, I think it would be interesting to know, what our donors know about free content. I would like to know, how many donors think of wikipedia as a service contrasted to those who think about it as project of free content. It is obvious that we need donors that support the cause/idea/vision behind our projects in order to donor binding, further support and especially donations for other projects. What do you think? --Till Mletzko (WMDE) 08:54, 6 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

+1. That'd really be interesting to know. --Church of emacs talk · contrib 16:10, 19 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Remarks to the da:translation

  1. An initial introduction to the Wikimedia Foundation seems to be missing. It shows up suddenly in Q16.
  2. There is a heading called Questions 20 & 21 - but only one question is posed.
  3. Should the US $ be converted to our local currency (i.e. DKK)? Regards, --Sir48 00:39, 29 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Sorry for the delayed response:

  1. The title of the survey is "Wikimedia Survey 2010" and the introduction also introduces it as a Wikimedia Foundation/Wikipedia survey. Furthermore, at the bottom of the first page there is also the Wikimedia Foundation logo, and these people will only learn about the survey when they're e-mailed a link from the "E-mail" that you translated.
  2. Yeah, I think that question was removed. Don't worry about it.
  3. You probably can if you want. Some languages did, some put both currencies, some converted, etc. It seems to be that putting both would be the best option, but I haven't heard anything either way. Cbrown1023 talk 20:20, 24 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Last minute changes

(For inputters, don't worry about this if you're a translator.)

  • Question #14: Very likely/Somewhat likely => Likely
  • Date: dd.mm.yyyy
  • Question #17: very rarely added

"crowd-sourced"

I really dislike the term "crowd-sourced", I believe it is demeaning to the wonderful work of thousands of volunteers, and seeing that I'm not the only one to dislike that term, I removed it --Church of emacs talk · contrib 16:10, 19 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

information never "sold or traded with"

I think the sentence Please be assured that your name and contact information will never be sold or traded with any other organization is somewhat open to interpretation. Selling information is an issue, but so is data circulation (e.g. in case the evaluation is done by a third party instead of WMF staff). Could you please clarify? --Church of emacs talk · contrib 16:17, 19 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Testing phase questions edit

This page is used for comments and corrections for the testing phase of the 2010 Fundraising Survey. We are closing the testing phase on July 27th, 2010. The survey is scheduled to launch in early August. Thanks for your time and help. Rand Montoya 18:46, 23 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Chapters question edit

Will the question about "were you aware you had the ability to donate to a national chapter" be confusing to those who don't actually have that option? I'm thinking of donors from the U.S. -- a big chunk of the pool. I notice the demographics question re: nationality comes after the chapters questions in the survey. Thoughts? -- phoebe 17:02, 24 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Mailings edit

Just to clarify, the donors will get a URL linking to the survey in their native language (and not English) in the e-mail, right? It would also be nice if we had a language switch on the first page (http://survey.wikimedia.org/index.php?sid=27415&newtest=Y&lang=de), just in case they want to switch there. Formal/informal tone clash on Hungarian edit

The survey questions were translated in informal tone (same as used in the Wikipedia interface) while the survey software's prompts ("please choose one") are in the formal tone. I wonder if you have access to the translation files of the survey software so we could change this one or two strings that are in the imperative mood. Otherwise it might be advisable that we rewrite the survey questions, however this would be a much larger task. --Dami 19:00, 24 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

(4:04:44 PM) Casey Brown: A few languages have two translations, btw (formal and informal): http://www.limesurvey.org/en/contribute/translations-status
(4:05:14 PM) Casey Brown: So you could probably just translate the strings we use in the survey and save it as hu-informal.
(4:06:26 PM) Bence Damokos: I'll see what I can do - the WMF will still have apply the translation file manually
(4:07:05 PM) Casey Brown: Yeah, I think they'd be able to do that.

Question 12 font edit

Does questions 12 have a different font on purpose?--Dami 20:21, 24 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

There was an issue with the way the text was copied and pasted into the survey software. I've fixed it in the actual survey, but not in the testing version which was setup for you guys to review. (I don't seem to have access to the "test" one.) --Az1568 (talk) 21:29, 24 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Question 28 - country list not translated edit

The list of countries is not translated (nor do I know where it comes from to remedy at least partially the situation). --Dami 20:28, 24 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

We had decided to not translate the list of countries for this survey. But if you if you really would like to translate it, I've placed a copy of it here. --Az1568 (talk) 21:38, 24 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
I think that at least the most likely country for a given language should be translated (e.g. France should be in French in the French version of the survey).
I have translated the list into Hungarian here.
Note, that Ethiopia is missing an "i" in the English version. --Dami 21:56, 24 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
