Hello, I was thinking that you would always see the hidden categories in the groups, but that you would only see the groupings that you have selected in your user preferences. If you want to see hidden categories but have not selected any groups then you would get all. Alternatively you could do it the other way round by making the user preference deselect a group so if checked you do not display it.

I think the granularity would be for each wiki to decide when they set-up the facility when it is available. If the community decide to split the grouping further, than they should be able to add another group to make it more granular. Smaller wikis or those that have few hidden categories may not need it but the option would be there.
