Recent WikiConference North America 2023 edit

Just a bit of a report back from the recent WikiConference North America 2023 in Toronto (overall program here, many relevant notes, slides, etc. are linked):

There were a few important "threads" in the discussions this year:

  • Governance, especially the formation of a North American Hub and (secondarily) the Movement Charter
  • AI, disinformation, and the credibility of Wikipedia content (some sessions overlapped these topics).
    • One potentially ominous scenario I hadn't considered: if most people get their information through a single smartspeaker, MML, etc., far fewer people will discover Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects, even when that is where their information comes from, and we will lose our main source of recruits.
  • Wikimedia and education, including education about Wikipedia
  • Editathons
  • Women and (ethnic and sexual) minorities

Three Cascadians who presented [if I missed someone, please add yourself]: myself, Peaceray and User:Buidhe. As it happens, none of us presented on any of the above topics (though we certainly engaged in plenty of the related discussions). I presented about some of my work with archival materials in Commons; Peaceray presented about using Wikidata for the first round of work on a biography; Buidhe presented on how to write featured articles. Also present from Cascadia were User:SounderBruce, User:Another Believer, sometime Cascadian User:Bluerasberry; WMF CPTO Selena Deckelmann, who lives in Portland, gave the opening plenary address. If I missed noting anyone else, please feel free to add yourself.

I was interviewed after the conference for Jim Hedger's Webcology podcast, out of Toronto. Here's a recording. His interview with me starts at about 9:58. Webcology is mostly a webcast about search engine optimization, but I'm interviewed here about my work in Wikimedia Commons (and a bit on Wikipedia). The original plan was to go into this at much greater length, but Google made enormous changes to their algorithm that week, and that inevitably took up most of the air in the room and the time in the podcast. - Jmabel (talk) 05:41, 20 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

More follow up - Selena Deckelman gave a speech there, and has now shared the text of her speech as a draft for publication in The Signpost. In her talk she mentions attending Wiki Cascadia meetups, so more attention for Cascadia. Bluerasberry (talk) 15:08, 10 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Greetings group contacts,

This is a notification to bring to your attention that your organization is currently past due on its required annual reporting.
