is it possible to use .htaccess as a make-shift ACL? edit

I don't know the inter-workings of wikimedia, but if it's using the filesystem directory structure... than it should be possible to use .ht{access,passwd} to implement page restrictions. my first guess is it uses a database. Even then, it should be possible to create users & groups, but then some wikimedia code would be needed for enforcement.
