Structured data for GLAM-Wiki

Structured data for GLAM-Wiki

About structured data on the Wikimedia projects

Welcome to this documentation hub: an introduction to structured data for GLAM-Wiki projects, using Wikidata, and Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons. This is written for staff of cultural institutions (GLAMs - Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums), but it will also be interesting for Wikimedia volunteers new to this topic.

Created in late 2019, some of the information in this portal may be outdated. Always get in touch with your local Wikimedia community, as they are best placed to help you with up-to-date knowledge and advice.

How you can help (as a Wikimedian)

What is structured data? This documentation hub kicks off with an introduction to structured and linked data. Next, we look at the different steps of organizing a GLAM-Wiki project with structured data.

Prepare a structured data project

Connect with the Wikimedia community

First steps: find Wikimedians to support you, create accounts, and prepare an on-wiki project page.

Check what is already on Wikimedia projects

In many cases, there will already be some content (media files and/or data) from your collections on Wikimedia projects. Check what's already there to avoid duplication.

Clarify copyright status

Wikimedia projects only host content under free licenses. The material that you contribute must comply to that. In any content partnership, good copyright clearance is key.

Prepare data and media

Select the data and media files you want to contribute, and prepare them to be compatible with Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata.

People, places and other concepts in your data need to be 'matched' with their corresponding Wikidata items.

Upload data and media

In this step, you upload your files and data to Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata.

Enrich the data and media

No upload is perfect from the start! Take some time to improve and correct.

Wikimedians can add valuable additional descriptions to your files and data. How do you invite them to do so?

Files on Wikimedia Commons and data on Wikidata can be re-used in many ways. How to encourage this?

Measure impact

Evaluate and report

How can you track the impact and re-use of your media and data on Wikimedia platforms?

Roundtrip data
