Strategy/Wikimedia movement/2018-20/Working Groups/Diversification process template

The first round of members for the nine Working Groups of the Movement Strategy Process have been selected. The Core Team is honoured to work with people with a wide range of expertise in their Thematic Area and knowledge about the Wikimedia ecosystem. Nevertheless, the Working Groups don't yet have the level of diversity that sufficiently represents the movement, that ensures a healthy disruption and brings in new voices and views beyond Wikimedia. This means we will increase our outreach efforts and accept additional applications. As a result, the diversified Working Groups will be more capable of providing innovative guidance for the movement as it strives towards the Strategic Direction of 2030.

The first task of the initial members is to increase the diversity of the groups.

To better support the Working Groups in completing the first task, the Core Team has developed some guiding questions, answers to which will help us better understand:

  • the ideal composition of the Working Group in the respective Thematic Area
  • the extent of diversity of existing Working Groups
  • the gaps in experience and expertise in the existing Working Group membership
  • the profiles that would help the Working Group to fill these

The Core Team recommends using the provided questions as a template for the Working Group diversification. The answers can be provided question by question or in a free form. Please engage as many of the existing Working Group members as possible in conversations regarding diversification, as to include different viewpoints to better notice possibilities for the Working Group. You might also ask for views and support from people outside of your group.

  • What are the existing gaps in membership of Working Groups in terms of diversity and expertise?
    • Compare the outlined ideal Working Group in your thematic area with the existing one and map present gaps. (You can use the generic diversity matrix provided by the Core Team AND/OR develop a more specific matrix for your thematic area.)
  • How could we reach people with profiles filling the gaps?
    • Define the communication channels or contact persons for reaching out to groups and people with needed profiles AND describe communication methods to be used for effective outreach.
