The Wikimedia Community User Group Uganda community held a one day Wikimedia 2030 strategy salon at Pope Paul Memorial Hotel Kampala. The Strategy Salons was an opportunity for the User Group to come together for a day not only to discuss movement strategy but also to strengthen our community as we were able to get participants from different parts of the country to meet in a single location. Two themes were chosen for the discussion, ie Resource Allocation and Roles and Responsibilities.
Out of the 9 thematic areas, our User Group chose Resource Allocation and Roles and Responsibilities as the topics for discussion.
To prepare participants for the discussion, 2 presentations were made on each of the topics covering the Rationale and the guiding questions.
Participants were engaged to choose three of the guiding questions to use during the discussions. After which the participants were grouped into 4 groups of 6 people each.
Each group discussed all the questions for each topic, after which they presented their answers, and got feedback from the other groups.
For each of the questions, one person was asked to summarize the responses for each question from all the groups and present it on video.
Summary of the discussion pointsEdit
The guiding questions covered and the responses from each group are covered below:
Roles and ResponsibilitiesEdit
Q: Which responsibilities are better placed at a global, regional, local or thematic level; which should be centralized and which decentralized?
Q: How can we be strategic about ensuring relevance as we scale while still supporting the existing editing community?
Q: What governance and organizational structures do we need to support the delivery of the strategic direction, particularly knowledge equity?
Q: How can resource allocation support structures that empower different actors within the free knowledge movement long-term? How is power connected to resource allocation and how can we utilize resource allocation to create change?
Q: What impact should the allocated resources create within our communities and the world?
Q: How might we allocate resources to secure innovation towards our 2030 goal?
Reflections from participants or partnersEdit
"The Strategy Salon was an opportunity to bring the Wikimedia Foundation closer to it's community (affiliates) with a "human touch" showing a commitment to moving together with Wikimedians and volunteers in emerging communities to build an ideal movement that current and future volunteers would like to be part of in the Strategic Direction". Co-founder/pioneer volunteer member - Wikimedia Community Usergroup Uganda --Douglaseru (talk) 17:59, 1 August 2019 (UTC)
