About Wikimedia UG Georgia
editWikimedia Community User Group Georgia, also UG-GE or Wikimedia UG Georgia, is an officially registered non-profit (non-commercial) legal entity representing the Wikimedia Foundation User Group, created by active members of Wikimedia contributors living in Georgia, who are interested in organizing and participating in outreach activities on a national level. It aims to promote and participate in the projects offered by the Wikimedia Foundation and to organize the Georgian community. One of its core missions is to aid and encourage people to collect, develop and disseminate knowledge and other educational, cultural and historic content in the public domain or other licenses that allows everyone to freely use the knowledge, and to distribute and modify said content for free.
What were we talking about
editAt the Georgian WikiConference, Wikimedia UG Georgia presented its annual report on all projects and the organization's work. We thoroughly discussed all issues related to the organization’s activities, as well as discussed problematic issues related to Wikimedia UG Georgia projects. At the conference, both Wikimedia UG Georgia representatives and all interested persons spoke. The conference also presented a plan for next year.
During the conference there was also a discussion about the strategic development of the Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) and additional recommendations for the WMF were developed that will also be taken into account by Wikimedia UG Georgia.
Summary of the Discussions
editDuring the salon, participants tried to develop recommendations on general problematic topics, as well as on specific issues, mainly on capacity building. Our recommendations for the Wikimedia Foundation during second strategy salon are listed below:
- It will be great if the Wikimedia Foundation develop and create the main guidelines for people who want to create new projects or programs for the development of Wikimedia projects. (For exmp.: If a specific person or community wants to create a wiki-school for beginners and there are no guidelines for working in Wikimedia projects. When creating such guidelines for them, the work will be facilitated.)
- Wikimedia Foundation should pay more attention to such Wikimedia organizations that work in problematic regions and countries. More attention should be paid to Wikimedia project participants from these countries as they need more support.
- The Foundation should make more efforts to bridge the gender imbalance between the number of Wikimedia project editors. more efforts are needed to attract female representatives to Wikimedia projects.
- Wikimedia Foundation should pay more attention to the development of small language Wikimedia projects in order to preserve and provide people with access to such projects.
- We must create friendly guides for newbies to Wikimedia projects.
- To train participants and develop Wikimedia projects, we need to pay more attention and finances.
