Global rollback for Savh

I would appreciate being able to use the rollback function globally again, to continue SWMT activity. I previously had access to the global rollbacking functions from March 2011 until my resignation as steward in September 2017, and I believe I could benefit from using this tool now again. Global rollback for Aranya

Hi everyone, I'd like to request global rollback to better help with cross-wiki patrolling. Having used SWViewer to monitor recent changes in the past few months, I've gained experience editing in areas and languages I am not too familiar with, so I think I can be trusted with this user right. I would be happy to answer any questions. Thanks, Aranya (talk) 06:21, 24 October 2020 (UTC)

Global rollback for Atcovi

The following request is closed. Please do not modify it. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

Hey! My global rollback rights were removed in July 2020 because I requested for them to be gone, and the same applies to my global sysop rights which were removed in August 2019. I thought there was no reason for me to upheld rights that I was not actively using. I've returned recently to not only SWMT work, but to editing the English Wikiversity (home wiki) and the English Wikibooks. Using the global rollback rights would aid me in my work of reverting vandalism/other nonsensical edits throughout Wikimedia. I'm planning on requesting the global sysop toolkit if I maintain consistent activity and if a need is evident for me. Thank you for your time. —Atcovi (Talk - Contribs) 16:23, 24 October 2020 (UTC) EDIT: Linking my previous requests for those who do not know me and would like to see my history:

I concur with you Leaderboard that what you've stated, a "period of repeated removals/reinstatement of GR", would be quite bothersome for the community. At the time I believed my life was heading in a direction to where there was no time allocated for Wikimedia - but plans have changed since then (despite the short period of time between July and October). Obviously I will not be getting into specifics about what was going on at the time, but I'm confident that my activity will remain steady in the foreseeable future as I'm writing this comment. I just do not personally like holding trusted positions without having any intention to remain active to use them, it seems redundant to me - hence the requests for removal. Thank you for voicing your concern, I'm happy to make myself clear on this matter. —Atcovi (Talk - Contribs) 15:18, 28 October 2020 (UTC)

Global rollback for QueerEcofeminist

I have been patrolling changes/pages using SWViewer and IRC for a while. I already have rollback rights on few projects and I make heavy use of it to revert vandalism/not so good edits on these projects. I am familiar with global and local rollback policies. GR rights would be great help to me in doing my work. I assure that, I will use it wisely and won't revert anything which I am not sure of (I will leave it for others!) thanks QueerEcofeminist "cite! even if you fight"!!! Global sysop for Lofty abyss

The following request is closed. Please do not modify it. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

It does seem to happen often where pages tagged are on wikis with no local sysops, in which case it seems it would be more sensible to delete them directly. I was one of the earliest gsysops a decade ago, so feel free to check my accuracy etc. from back then or my more recent tags. Thanks. --Lofty abyss 15:41, 15 October 2020 (UTC)

Not ending before 29 October 2020 15:41 UTC
  •   Strong support Sysop on 6 wikis. Nieuwsgierige Gebruiker (CA) 16:34, 15 October 2020 (UTC)
  •   Neutral. Sysop on a number of wikis and a steward for nearly a decade. They have experience and can be trusted to not misuse the tools. The concern is - according to the logs - they seem to have a history of being rarely active with the tools outside of enwiki. And i don't see much improvement (e. g. they have sysop rights on Commons and they haven't made even a 100 edits there in 8 years). So I have my doubts about this and I'm not really excited to promote, but I am also not opposing. Meiræ 20:29, 15 October 2020 (UTC)
  •   Strong oppose per Meiræ and also everything that's been said at their recent CU run at enwiki, candidacy for stewardship earlier this year and their steward confirmation last year, and the combative behavior shown at those. —Thanks for the fish! talkcontribs 21:04, 15 October 2020 (UTC)

  •   Neutral It has done good work for Wikimedia in the past. Although I couldn't vote, I followed closely the steward confirmations in the past years. Therefore I'am worried. It joined us again. However, I am still concerned for global sysopship about cross-wiki activities. I'm sorry. Good luck. --Uncitoyentalk 12:58, 16 October 2020 (UTC)
  •   Oppose per Meiræ and Tks4Fish. --Martin Urbanec (talk) 14:48, 16 October 2020 (UTC)
  •   Neutral. While I don't doubt that the intention of this request has been made in good faith, I really feel the request for this is a bit too early for my taste. And because it so early after coming back into activity it gives off the vibe of hat collecting, especially since Lofty abyss under his previous name got demoted as steward for inactivity. I will not oppose this request as I do the good work he has done, but I will also not support it as I feel continued activity should be shown before even assiging this right. --Wiki13 (talk) 15:02, 16 October 2020 (UTC)
  •   Oppose per Meiræ and Tks4Fish. @Nieuwsgierige Gebruiker: regarding being a sysop on 6 wikis, note that one of those six is, which generally grants admin access on request if the user is a sysop on another wiki. For the other five, on adminship was gained after the user "requested it politely on IRC" (see mw:Special:UserRights/Lofty_abyss) and the rights do not appear to be used much (10 admin actions ago was February 2020, 20 admin actions ago was September 2019, only 231 total edits) and on commons the user is also fairly inactive (10 admin actions ago was February 2020, excluding automated edits from global renames 10 edits ago was November 2017 and 20 edits ago was October 2016). I'm sure on their home projects their rights are used more frequently (enwiki and simple) but I believe there is a pattern of requesting advanced rights and then barely using them (the same pattern that led to losing confirmation for steward rights). --DannyS712 (talk) 15:12, 16 October 2020 (UTC)
  •   Neutral per Wiki13 & Meiræ. --Minorax (talk) 15:18, 16 October 2020 (UTC)
  •   Oppose I don't understand why you want more userrights when you have a long and continuing history of not using the ones you have. Adding onto your pile of unused advanced rights is a significant liability for communities. In line with that, it is highly irresponsible of you to continue to try and add to your dusty hat collection while neglecting the communities who trusted you with advanced rights. I would say my usual "thank you for volunteering", but we both know that's not what you're doing. You don't "volunteer" anything more than the exact minimum which is required to retain a given hat, and for hats without minimums, you rarely, if ever, use them. You are the textbook definition of, and arguably the most prolific, hat collector. No, I cannot support this request. If you continue to stumble on pages needing deletion on GS wikis, use GSR. Vermont (talk) 15:45, 16 October 2020 (UTC)
  •   Strong oppose sorry but I too feel that this will just be another "hat" for the "hat collection". The candidate (in my view) seems to do the bare minimum on a number of projects just to keep the mop. I am not convinced that this right will actually be used. --IWI (talk) 15:50, 16 October 2020 (UTC)
  • Yes, this hat collecting is out of control. Your contributions are simplewiki go back to the beginning of 2020 in just the most recent 50 even though we are like 3/4 of the way through the year. From what I've been told you used to do all 100 at christmas time as well. Being inactive is fine, but what is not is gaming in the inactivity policy. And especially not when you are going to request more rights. There is a reason you failed your steward confirmation. I think you need less rights not more. Naleksuh (talk) 16:08, 16 October 2020 (UTC)
  •   Oppose, per Vermont. Tools are to be used. Esteban16 (talk) 16:22, 16 October 2020 (UTC)
  • Based on the crossactivity analysis, I think it's clear the candidate isn't active in GS wikis or rather the wikis they are active in, they already have rights. The last meta logged action is in August is noteworthy, here there seems to have something to do almost every day. I don't like to pile on but this is concerning. The nomination statement saying active in crosswiki isn't backed up by facts. The table below I provided is just the most active wikis they are in. •   Support sure: it really is the user right with the least cause to be concerned about on any Wikimedia project. It’s not truly global, and by definition is limited to places where it can’t do any harm to an existing community since it can really only be used on projects with limited to no community. The only concern is the intadmin bits, but if they wanted to harm people that way they could just request it and have them on, where it’s basically given on request.
The only real reason to oppose this is because they run you the wrong way, which usually is what hatcollecting accusations boil down to (said as someone who has made them before about others.) I don’t know lofty particularly well, but I honestly don’t see any reason to oppose this considering there’s next to zero risk of anything bad happening. TonyBallioni (talk) 00:32, 18 October 2020 (UTC)
    • Yes, but it is hard to monitor since there are no tools that combine the logs of 600+ wikis into one place for further review. I've seen small wikis get broken because of some technical issue and it takes weeks to figure that out - never mind admin actions. --Rschen7754 01:10, 18 October 2020 (UTC)
  •   Oppose per my past comments on these requests. --Rschen7754 01:10, 18 October 2020 (UTC)

  •   Weak support Lofty Abyss was a steward for 8 full years. The hat collection concern is probably justified, but my standard for supporting global sysops is simply whether I think they wouldn't do damage while using the tools. Inactivity is less of a concern for me in that regard. Still, I see why others are opposing and can't fault them for their solid reasoning. –MJLTalk 17:41, 24 October 2020 (UTC)
  •   Weak oppose. I don't see much change since low activity has been raised as a major issue. I hope you can prove me wrong, but introduction is not appealing on that regard.—Teles «Talk to me ˱C L @ S˲» 04:40, 28 October 2020 (UTC)

Requests for global IP block exemption

Global IP block exempt for Theodore Ehrenborg

I use a VPN to avoid ad trackers and out of general paranoia.

I don't edit Wikipedia (i.e. English Wikipedia) very often, maybe twice a month. Usually it's a spontaneous decision: I'm reading an article, and I see a typo, a missing citation, or some other small problem. Turning off my VPN before the edit and turning it on after the edit doubles how much time I have to spend. So I haven't fixed the last few typos I've seen because it's too much of a hassle to fiddle with my VPN. Theodore Ehrenborg (talk) 13:39, 1 October 2020 (UTC)

I looked at my edit history, and I've made 12 Wikipedia edits in the past year. So "twice a month" is an overestimate. Theodore Ehrenborg (talk) 13:42, 1 October 2020 (UTC)
If you primarily edit on English Wikipedia, you most likely would want local IPBE instead, since English Wikipedia also blocks the VPNs independent of the global blocks. And we don't hand out if you use it on single project. — regards, Revi 13:48, 1 October 2020 (UTC)
PS: If you get IP block Exemption (IPBE) on English Wikipedia, that will automatically exclude you from global blocks and local block, but Global IP Block Exemption (GIPBE) doesn't make you immune from the local block. In either case, since you are primarily active on English Wikipedia, I believe you should apply for IP Block Exemption on English Wikipedia. see how. — regards, Revi 14:01, 1 October 2020 (UTC)
Thanks—I tried applying for local IPBE using Wikipedia's Unblock Ticket Request System, but it told me, "We were not able to locate your block." It looks like you're recommending that I email, so I'll do that. The reason I applied for a global unblock is that the block message sent me here, and I didn't know about local unblocks. Theodore Ehrenborg (talk) 14:09, 1 October 2020 (UTC)
They granted me an unblock. Thanks for the advice! Theodore Ehrenborg (talk) 07:29, 3 October 2020 (UTC)

BrunoBoehmler, do you mind responding please? --Base (talk) 05:45, 30 September 2020 (UTC)

In that case, I think turning it off and on is usually desired because this user right is mostly reserved for the people in the area where VPN is absolutely needed - like, in China (and Hong Kong) or Iran, you can be dragged into government torturing facility just because you "don't uphold the Government's truth". Or where the access to Wikipedia is blocked and you need a VPN to even read it (=China) — regards, Revi 15:55, 30 September 2020 (UTC)

Not done @AWMBot: It works the other way around - local IP block exemption bypasses both local and global blocks, but global IP block exemption bypasses only global blocks. There are already a number of global renamers from enwiki that seem to be managing the load. Find an area to contribute in, get into a fun workflow you like, and request rights that would help your work only if and when you have the necessary experience and community trust for it. Your activity of late is not the way to go, and gives the impression that you're more interested in collecting hats than contributing to the project in a meaningful way. 2FA Tester for Cairo2k18

I have read the help page located at Help:2FA alongside w:Help:2FA and I am requesting two factor authentication access as I would like to better secure my account (I already have an existing randomly generated password) additionally I am also requesting 2FA as I have additional permissions on the English Wikipedia that could be used to do more damage than a typical user could. PS. Is WebAuthn supported yet? As per here.

Done. As for WebAuthn, apparently it is, but there's no recovery method, so be aware of it. —Thanks for the fish! talkcontribs 13:52, 29 October 2020 (UTC)
It seemed that the WebAuthn implementation has 2 weaknesses: it doesn't have a recovery method other than a backup security key (therefore requiring you to have 2 keys, TOTP has scratch codes as a backup method), and forcing you to login on the original wiki where you enabled the WebAuthn (e.g. is considered a different domain from, by design). Sticking to TOTP for the time being. Thanks for the help and the warning. :-) --Malikussaid (talk) 22:17, 30 October 2020 (UTC)

Abusefilter helper for Abusefilter global search service account

Hello everyone! I'm currently developing a tool for AbuseFilter developers, to make it easier to query all Wikimedia abuse filters. This is useful, because it allows to fix filters that would be affected by a breaking change in AF's code. The tool will be available at Because fetching all filters takes about ten minutes, I'm caching all filters in the tool's database, which makes all searches to run smoothly. To avoid putting any credentials for my steward account at toolforge, I want to use this service account instead. This account will only fetch all abuse filters to a database, and then the tool can run queries over it.

Thanks, Martin Urbanec writing via --Abusefilter global search service account (talk) 21:06, 12 October 2020 (UTC)

I confirm this is my account. --Martin Urbanec (talk) 21:06, 12 October 2020 (UTC)

  • Seems reasonable, basically a bot account and assuming that continuing access would require that the operator continues to have or exceed the access of the account I support this. — xaosflux Talk 21:22, 12 October 2020 (UTC)
@Xaosflux: for the record, the intent is to use the tool to expose the results via toolforge to users other than the operator --DannyS712 (talk) 21:44, 12 October 2020 (UTC)
That's right. Note the tool isn't available to anyone who doesn't have abusefilter-view and abusefilter-view-private across all wikis (right now, stewards, global AF helpers, and global AF maintainers). --Martin Urbanec (talk) 21:55, 12 October 2020 (UTC)
  •   Support This tool brings a huge improvement to the process used to find filters that are going to be affected by backend changes. As such, I believe that it should always be in condition to operate quickly, efficiently, and without hacks (like Martin using his personal account). --Daimona Eaytoy (talk) 23:12, 12 October 2020 (UTC)

Done account run by a trusted user, with a valid use case. If anyone disagrees, feel free to undo my close. —Thanks for the fish! talkcontribs 00:10, 13 October 2020 (UTC)
