Global lock/unlock for 10.64.32.106

Status:    Done

The reason given is Cross-wiki abuse. • Start of block: 17:55, 2 December 2013 • Expiry of block: 23:55, 2 December 2013 The blocked proxy address was 10.64.32.106. Please include all above details in any queries you make. I have no idea who would've been vandalizing on this IP, or why the block is affecting me, as my IP is nowhere close to this. --TenPoundHammer (talk) 22:59, 2 December 2013 (UTC)

Same here. The first two digits of my IP are 98, not 10. Big difference. No idea what's going on here. Ramaksoud2000 (talk) 23:02, 2 December 2013 (UTC)
Appears to be fixed. Ramaksoud2000 (talk) 23:05, 2 December 2013 (UTC)
Confirmed problem, although mine said 10.64.32.107 rather than .106 ... this is a server-side misconfig of some sort, because 10.x.y.z addresses are *not* internet-visible, they are for LANs only. 74.192.84.101 23:05, 2 December 2013 (UTC)

Why has this ip address been blocked? The WikiVoyage page says it is blocked because of cross-wiki abuse, however I only actively participate on WikiVoyage and occasionally upload images to WikiMedia (and not recently). Please unblock. --Andrewssi2 (talk) 3 December 2013

Global unblock for 69.140.217.153

Status:    Done

Hello! I was very puzzled as to why my IP was blocked. And then, I found out that my IP has been blocked for Cross-Wiki Abuse. I asked my kids what happened. And it seems like my kids stumbled across my computer and started vandalizing wikis. I pretty much made sure they wouldn't stumble around the computer when I am working on the Wikimedia Projects. And here! I have a Wikiversity account named "Goldenburg111". --Goldenburg111 Number3 (talk) 18:36, 29 November 2013 (UTC)

Global unblock for Reyk

Status:    Done

I don't understand why this has been done to me. I have been editing Wikipedia for 8 years, I have nevert vandalized anything and never been blocked before. Please unblock me. You do not have permission to edit this page, for the following reason:

One or more proxy servers used by your request is globally blocked.

The block was made by Vituzzu (meta.wikimedia.org). The reason given is Cross-wiki abuse.

   Start of block: 22:55, 2 December 2013
   Expiry of block: 04:55, 3 December 2013

The blocked proxy address was 10.64.32.106. Please include all above details in any queries you make.

If you believe you were blocked by mistake, you can find additional information and instructions in the No open proxies global policy. Otherwise, to discuss the block please post a request for review on Meta-Wiki. --Reyk (talk) 23:08, 2 December 2013 (UTC)

Never mind. I see it's been fixed already. Reyk (talk) 23:10, 2 December 2013 (UTC)
Yep, sorry for the trouble. --Vituzzu (talk) 23:11, 2 December 2013 (UTC)

Global block/unlock for 66.108.130.116

Status:    Not done

I'm not sure why I've been locked. Seems like I'm just doing small and accurate edits.

There is no global block on the IP address, nor do I see that we have done one. I would suggest that you check to see whether local admins applied a local block — billinghurst sDrewth 11:13, 6 December 2013 (UTC)

Merci ! --CDI Océane (talk) 09:44, 27 November 2013 (UTC)

Thank you for the contact, and the information that you provided. I have made a note on the unblock that it is an internal proxy for an education facility. I will also make a note for stewards in another resource to try help mitigate the recurrence. — billinghurst sDrewth 11:20, 6 December 2013 (UTC)

Unblocking of dynamic IP 213.162.68.109

Status:    Done

213.162.68.109 At this moment the IP 213.162.68.109 is locked, but this is a dynamic address and so I was locked. It's very craz and you should give more attention if locking if static or dynamic. --Karl Gruber (talk) 08:23, 5 December 2013 (UTC)

the ban was imposed on this single IP address only (see [1]) because of cross-wiki spam.
  1. the ban was done properly as cross-wiki spam needs this kind of global ban and only the single IP address has been banned, not the whole range, which would have been much more disruptive to regular users
  2. as this is a dynamic address from an austrian mobile provider, so a ban of 1 month seems to be not usefil to me, for two reasons:
    1. a notorius spammer simply reconnects himself and gets a new IP, being able to continue the spamming
    2. regular users, such as Karl Gruber, are being blocked a in the long run and don't know why and how this could happen. In this case Karl approached me and I advised him to restart his modem, afterwards he was fine.
Another important note: With this global ban user cannot even complain or contact on this page, so telling them to go to Steward requests for more information is pointless. People are effectively being blocked from doing anything, including to find out why they are blocked, if they are not technical gurus, knowing where to find Global Block logs or that they need to restart their modems.
Suggestion: Global bans on dynamic IP addresses shouldn't be longer than 3 days in order to avoid or minimise these problems. Normally these users get a new IP address every 24 hours, so even 1 day might be good. --Manuel Schneider(bla) (+/-) 09:06, 5 December 2013 (UTC)
  1. It is not called locking.
  2. It is not called banning.
  3. Global blocks don't apply to Meta, and they have an error message which tells people how to complain. --MF-W 10:44, 5 December 2013 (UTC)
Karl Gruber was unable to comment / ask here before getting a new IP address, that's a fact. Nonetheless, the collatoral damage is higher, many users don't even know why that happen to them and what should they do. So we really should minimise the collatoral damage, especially as the block doesn't achieve its goal anyway - at latest after 24h, regular users are being affected by the block and the spammer is not. That can't be the goal. Hence my suggestion in limiting these blocks to 1 or maybe 3 days. --Manuel Schneider(bla) (+/-) 10:56, 5 December 2013 (UTC)
I should add: This is the second time in one month that Karl Gruber has had this issue. I wouldn't push for that if it was the first time. Appearantly it happens more often than we think. --Manuel Schneider(bla) (+/-) 10:58, 5 December 2013 (UTC)
It was a problematic IP with spambots, and these days stewards generally find that a block for a month is more effective than shorter. In this case it takes a little more time, nuance, familiarity, and a good IP domain tool to identify that this is a range for a mobile telephone company. A week would have been more suitable, so I have removed the block. @Karl Gruber: so apologies for your getting caught, though no apologies should be necessary for imposing the block. It is an imperfect science, and battling spam is something that we wish we didn't have to do. There is a spammer within the range, and if the provider is assiduous maybe we can work with them to identify the perpetrator and they can take actions; are they helpful with abuse complaints? — billinghurst sDrewth 11:00, 6 December 2013 (UTC)

Status:    Done

I wish to know , am I blocked ??? on what basis, is wiki is in the hand of a set of people I don't wish to work on it, otherwise, let me know what is my mistake , who blocked unwarrantedly, what is his intension ? and on what capacity he blocked... I have a request, when ever you block someone , always do give on what basis you have blocked, means a vital reason is required, hope you will look into the matter and do the needful..

regards

--Travancorehistory (talk) 10:59, 8 December 2013 (UTC)

Special:CentralAuth/Travancorehistory doesn't show that you are blocked at any wiki. I have run a quick checkuser, and see that you are editing from a globally blocked IP address. I am modifying the block so that it will now be a soft block, which means that you will need to login to edit. — billinghurst sDrewth 12:35, 8 December 2013 (UTC)
By the way the block message always also tells you which reason was given for the block, if you can read. --MF-W 12:55, 8 December 2013 (UTC)

This dinamic IP (one from widely range), provided by regional internet-provider at the Sakha Republic (Russia). Currently, this block was affected to several users of Sakha Wikipedia (sah:). I believe that such a long time (half-year) for dynamic IP blocking is not correct (usually 1-2 days is enough). Please unblock this IP.--Kaganer (talk) 22:49, 21 December 2013 (UTC)

There is a web server operating from the IP address [3] and it is the source of spam; so I am suspecting that it is a closed proxy rather than an open proxy. I am reticent to completely remove the block, so I have converted it to a soft block. If a local wiki wishes to whitelist the IP address then feel free. — billinghurst sDrewth 02:23, 22 December 2013 (UTC)
Note: being a closed proxy with a web service operating through it more indicates that it is not a dynamic IP. — billinghurst sDrewth 02:25, 22 December 2013 (UTC)
Maybe that. Thanks! --Kaganer (talk) 10:01, 22 December 2013 (UTC)

Reason: My account work within open proxy, I edit on arwiki, look at here--De Berto (talk) 06:46, 19 December 2013 (UTC)

Your account is not locked. You are blocked by a global range block. You need to request an IPBE on arwiki in order to be able to edit there. If arwiki is the only place you edit, please ask an admin there to help you. If you cannot contact anyone because of the IP block, we can make the request for you. QuiteUnusual (talk) 08:16, 19 December 2013 (UTC)
If I made a request for IPBE on arwiki, so, what about "wikidata" and "commons" ? of course I need to make a request there too, thats why I asked for a global IPBE, I hope you reconsider the the request here...--De Berto (talk) 22:14, 19 December 2013 (UTC)
You didn't asked for Global IPBE, you asked for a global unlock which is why I responded to say your account wasn't locked. In order to provide a Global IPBE we will need to know the exact message you receive when you edit so we can confirm the IP address block that you are caught in. Please email the message you receive to stewards@wikimedia.org and someone will pick up the request. Thanks. QuiteUnusual (talk) 12:51, 20 December 2013 (UTC)
