Request for global (un)block

The following discussion is closed.
  • This is a cross-wiki vandal IP. His/her edit pattern tells that s/he originally tried to contribute jawiki, and s/he soon found that an encyclopedia is too difficult for him/her to contribute, and then turned him/herself into a cross-wiki vandal. Thank you. --Kanjy 17:57, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
Done Blocked 3 months. Kylu 18:01, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

  • This is a Google proxy, . It is, not always, but often used for vandalism. It is considered inappropreate for editing Wikimedia wikis in the light of No open proxies. Thank you. --Kanjy 17:57, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
Hello Kanjy, for global blocks the [no open proxy]-thing does not apply, IMHO the IP should not be globally blocked yet, it seems to have stopped its vandalism and only vandalized wikis with active admins, so they can handle it, if they continue please let us know, thanks, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 17:27, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

Request for global (un)lock and (un)hiding

  • 殺人犯
  • Please block User:殺人犯 : this name means "homicidal criminal" in Japanese and has been listed in jawp titleblacklist. But this user created this account in zh_yuewiki on 11 July 2009 to evade the blacklint and logged in jawp automatically in the same day. --miya 22:06, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

Global lock for みかんちゃん

Status:    Done

This is a cross-wiki vandal only account, a probable sockpuppet of this one and/or another. He did nothing but blanking pages at jawikinews and jawikt. Thank you. --Kanjy 14:18, 1 July 2009 (UTC)

done, a similar vandal was active on ja.wikisource today: s:ja:特別:投稿記録/りんごちゃん. Best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 14:42, 1 July 2009 (UTC)
Takk, geimfyglið! I agree with you, on their behavior and usernames. The みかんちゃん (Mikan-chan) account looks a sockpuppet (or a copycat) of りんごちゃん (Ringo-chan). --Kanjy 00:34, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

Global lock for Desiphral

The following discussion is closed.
Status:    Not done

Desiphral has admitted -- somewhat unclearly because he was trying to defend himself -- that he has shared his account with paid spammers, across many languages of Wikipedia. The discussion, if it's not archived, is at w:en:WP:Administrators' Noticeboard#Bad_news.

Really unfortunate side-effect: Desiphral is the only administrator of the Romani Wikipedia (rmy:). I have no idea what to do about that. Rspeer 04:18, 6 July 2009 (UTC)

Locking the account is not possible, as Desiphral has not unified globally. Please clarify which (if any) of the accounts using this name have created spam-articles as charged. (Not closed, awaiting response) Kylu 05:01, 6 July 2009 (UTC)
I don't believe there's anything actionable by a steward here. As Kylu notes, the account isn't global, so no type of global lock can be placed on it. This seems to be a matter for individual projects. Local admins can block this account if they see fit to (though it's seem noteworthy that the English Wikipedia account is currently not blocked). --MZMcBride 13:36, 6 July 2009 (UTC)
The problem is that he is the local admin on rmy:. I'm trying to find the place to bring that up. A spammer shouldn't have an entire Wikipedia as his domain. My proposal would be to search for other Romani users to make admins in his place. Rspeer 06:23, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
This particular request is closed. It appears that the "village pump" equivalent is at rmy:Vakyarimata:Sherutni_patrin_-_शेरुत्नि_पात्रीन. You can ask there if you'd like, I suspect. Preferably, no more discussion in this section please. If you think it's a situation deserving cross-wiki discussion, try Wikimedia Forum perhaps. Thanks. Kylu 06:31, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

# 16:43, 15 July 2009 William M. Connolley (talk | contribs | block) unblocked "Muntuwandi (talk | contribs)" ‎ (Promised to be good)
I don't think it's our place to tell enwiki the unblock was wrong, and the other issues can seemingly be dealt with on a project-by-project basis. Still, I'd appreciate input from other stewards.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 03:23, 23 July 2009 (UTC)
I agree with Mike. We're not going to reverse a local block, nor issue an account lock regarding problems that haven't been dealt with by the local projects first. Cross-wiki in this case seems to be limited to en. and commons, both of which have a variety of administrators and policies in place to deal with issues. If both projects block him and he evades the blocks, then let us know and a different answer may be forthcoming. Kylu 03:28, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

Requests for global permissions

temporary global "editinterface"

I need to update all search bar since the new theme vector. The external search engine disapear in all project, probably i need it for one month. Pmartin 07:52, 4 July 2009 (UTC)

I don't think Vector is stable. Please check with the usability team - if there will be changes necessitating further updates, I wouldn't want you to waste your time.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 01:44, 5 July 2009 (UTC)
Actually, Pmartin is not talking about Vector. The usability team changed every search bars, not only Vector's. Dodoïste 09:54, 6 July 2009 (UTC)
I confirm the previous statement. There is no external search engine anymore. Pmartin is known on fr.wikipedia and trustable. He developped inside his company an external links cache.
Now, I agree with Mike.lifeguard to check with the usability project they're not going to overwrite furthermore non vector-related interface items. //ly because it doesn't make an obstacle to fix it right now, as a search engine is something important in a website. --Dereckson 18:52, 6 July 2009 (UTC)
Agreed, pmartin can check with usability team than no other breakage can occur, but we need a fix also for their code change, monobook must be fixed. Phe 18:58, 6 July 2009 (UTC)
Alternative web search engine on wikipedia is not a bad idea when the internal search don't work. For example: en:Pablo Urtazun Perez [6] or [7] It's obvious... Otourly 19:20, 6 July 2009 (UTC)
I support Pmartin's request - I know him as a trustable colleague wikipedian from wiki-fr. Kind regards, MoiraMoira 19:21, 6 July 2009 (UTC) admin on wiki-nl
I support Pmartin's request too, for the same reasons than Moira, phe, Dereckson, Dodoïste and Otourly :) − Elfix × talk (fr) 19:59, 6 July 2009 (UTC)
There is no need for supporting him; he has had this right several times before, and is trusted. The question is if it's needed or not, and for that he should talk with the usability-team. Laaknor 20:09, 6 July 2009 (UTC)
Please compare the english search, the german search and the french search. With the english search we can select the search engine we wish to use (Mediawiki, Google, Yahoo, Bing, Wikiwix, Exalead) which is not the case on any other languages. So it needs to be fixed, isn't it ? Dodoïste 23:26, 6 July 2009 (UTC)
It does not need to be fixed if the developers intend to rewrite (and scap into production) the search every day for the next two weeks. The developers also has the rights to fix this, therefor Pmartin should talk to the developers before doing anything. Laaknor 06:54, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
It does either way! :) But would mean that we are to wait until it's stable again.
Does anyone know a name (or two) to contact in particular about this ? DarkoNeko 08:07, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
Of course (too early in the morning for me :P). What I mean is that we need some more cooperation with the developers, as it shouldn't be needed to fix this every couple of months. I think Trevor is the senior developer on usability, otherwise it's probably Tim or Brion that knows the changes in the sourcecode best. Laaknor 08:18, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
It s what i do [8] thank you Laaknor for the contact Pmartin 08:21, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
Hello. The external search option is not related with the recent usability release which was deployed on July 1st. So if the local configuration is changed somehow, please feel free to restore them. Naoko Komura --Shuhari 22:01, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

OK, I've granted Pmartin these rights for 4 weeks so these updates can be done immediately. Longer-term, Pmartin will be talking with some developers to get external searching implemented as an extension which could be centrally maintained with SVN commit access and reviewed and deployed through the normal code review and site update processes. This will be a much better solution for all involved over the mid- to long-term.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 22:14, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

Rights removed after ~4 weeks. Laaknor 09:54, 9 August 2009 (UTC)

Global rollback for Juliancolton

Hi all. I requested global rollback a few months ago, and was rejected because I lacked the necessary experience. I feel I'm now sufficiently experienced, as I'm a sysop on four projects (enwiki, simplewiki, simplewikiquote, and commonswiki) and an active cross-wiki vandal fighter. I'm familiar with all relevant policies, as well, and I feel I have a strong enough need for the tool. Thank you for considering this request. –Juliancolton | Talk 01:35, 22 July 2009 (UTC)

  •   Support yes , he knew how to use it . --Mardetanha talk 01:37, 22 July 2009 (UTC)
  •   Support You've done a ton of cross-wiki anti-vandal work and haven't seen any gigantic protests in front of the WMF demanding your head, so seems like this would be an easy pick. Kylu 02:22, 22 July 2009 (UTC)
  •   Support... I'm not sure "a ton" is accurate w.r.t. cross-wiki work, however he does know what he's doing. I see no problem granting the request.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 03:25, 23 July 2009 (UTC)
