Russia-Iran Wiki Collaboration

Members of the Iranian Wikimedians User Group and the North-West Russia Wiki-Historians User Group held an online meeting on 2 November 2024 to establish the following collaborative initiatives:

Photography of Cultural and Historical Artifacts

The groups agreed to launch an initiative to photograph and document cultural, historical, and artistic artifacts connected to Iran and Russia that are housed in each other’s countries. The first phase will include photographing Iranian artifacts in the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, and Russian artworks in Iranian institutions, such as the Museum of Fine Arts in Sa’dabad Complex in Tehran. These images will be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons to enrich related articles and enhance access to cultural heritage from both nations.

Joint Article Writing Contest

The groups plan to hold a two-week collaborative article writing contest in mid-January 2025. During this period, Persian Wikipedia contributors will create articles about Russia, and Russian Wikipedia contributors will create articles about Iran. Outstanding contributions will be awarded prizes, with the details of the prizes to be determined later.

Online Meetings and Webinars

Due to financial limitations and difficulties in traveling to attend Wikimedia conferences for both Iranians and Russians, the groups decided to hold online meetings and webinars in English. These sessions will allow for the exchange of information and the discussion of common issues.

Joint Efforts for Securing Financial and Non-Financial Support

Both groups agreed to work together to seek financial and non-financial support from the Wikimedia Foundation, using their shared knowledge to improve their applications.
