Research talk:Baseline Metrics for Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons

Re: File description

edit

A couple of thoughts on the "File description" section:

  • Did you run the language detection on the descriptions of pages with language templates? It would give you a rough idea of the accuracy of the language detection for this task to compare templates with detected languages. The graphs of detected languages you have look quite reasonable, though (unlike the 30%+ of English WP ZRR queries that were detected as "Romanian" by a language detection plugin we tried out that one time)—so this probably isn't necessary, just interesting.
  • The ridiculously large numbers might might this impractical, but did you consider sharing your language detection results somewhere? Even if they aren't 100% accurate, it would give community members a head start on adding language templates where they are needed.

PS: Thanks for the great report. I've enjoyed reading it so far (and making minor edits along the way). :) TJones (WMF) (talk) 17:59, 2 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Meta Suggestion

edit

I have a suggestion about suggestions! You should collect your explicit and implicit suggestions (like creating a "reason for deletion" UI, or encouraging/requiring at least one language template in new/edited descriptions) and collecting them at the bottom of the page, with links to Phab tickets. There are good ideas for making metrics easier to track, but they are also good for Commons in general. TJones (WMF) (talk) 19:30, 2 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Commons search question

edit

"The full-text search results clickthrough rate is 10.42% on Commons, which is much lower than that on English Wikipedia. For autocomplete search, Commons' clickthrough rate is about 19%."

and

"Users are much more likely to click to see other pages of search results on Commons (10.85%) than users on English Wikipedia (0.31%). Together with clickthrough rate, we believe that users are less likely to find what they want through search on Commons."

I'm sorry, I might be dense. Do I understand that the completion suggester on Commons is OK in comparison to English Wikipedia, but the actual search results page is not as useful? CKoerner (WMF) (talk) 16:56, 3 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
