Patrols (users who fight against vandalism) check edits in Wikipedia using different methods:

  • In small languages using Special:RecentChanges, a page that automatically shows last edits made in the wiki.
  • In bigger wikis using watchlists, a page that shows recent edits in pages each users choose.

A reason of using the watchlist in bigger wikis is because recent changes feed changes drastically fast that patrols can’t keep up reviewing them. For example in Wikidata two edits by humans is being made every second on average while watchlists show only edits in subset of opt-in pages. Checking edits via watchlist can be problematic since vandalisms stay until someone notices them. And for Wikis like Wikidata, whose content is being used by +300 Wikis (most notably Wikipedia languages), catching vandalisms in real time is vital but scale of the Wiki is too big for solemnly human review.
