Research:Characterizing Wikipedia Reader Behaviour/S1-Persian

Survey 1, Persian Wikipedia edit

Goal edit

To assess whether the dimensions and categories in each dimension identified in S1-English persist in other languages (or that we need to generate different sets of dimensions and categories for each language).

Design edit

When
The survey ran from 2016-01-28 to 2016-01-30.
Project
Persian Wikipedia
Platform
Desktop + Mobile
Sample
75.19:100: Note: The test initially started with 1:133 or 0.007519, however, shortly after the sampling rate was increased by a factor of 2 to conclude the test faster.
Question
The question the user was asked was "Why are you reading this article today?" or in Persian: "چرا این مقاله را امروز می‌خوانید؟". User responses were collected in the form of short free form text entries, the referring article was not included in the response.
Date collection and privacy policy
Data collection occurred via Google Forms. The survey widget linked to a privacy policy designed for this survey.

Analysis edit

210 responses were randomly selected out of a total of 3615 responses. One researcher, a Persian native speaker, hand-coded the responses, following the instructions below (Note: instructions were agreed on to make the hand-coding consistent between the Persian and Spanish analysis):

For each dimension (depth, familiarity, motivation):

if the response fits into one of the dimensions: select an option from the set of available options for that dimension.

else: leave the dimension blank.

Enter notes about responses that did not fit into any dimension.

Enter notes that fit into dimensions depth or motivation, but required the label "other".

Through this analysis, we learned that the dimensions and categories identified in S1-English persist as we study Persian speaking readers of Wikipedia.
