Requests for new languages/Wikipedia Shan

submitted verification final decision

This proposal has been approved.
The Board of Trustees and language committee have deemed that there is sufficient grounds and community to create the new language project.

A committee member provided the following comment:

Congratulations! Phabricator is phab:T206777. Please be patient; there are two projects ahead of this in line. In the meanwhile, please continue to contribute at Incubator. For LangCom: StevenJ81 (talk) 17:08, 11 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
  • The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
  • The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:
What Value Example / Explanation
Proposal
Language code shn (SILGlottolog) A valid ISO 639-1 or 639-3 language code, like "fr", "de", "nso", ...
Language name Shan Language name in English
Language name ၵႂၢမ်းတႆးလူင် Language name in your language. This will appear in the language list on Special:Preferences, in the interwiki sidebar on other wikis, ...
Language Wikidata item Q56482 - item has currently the following values:
Item about the language at Wikidata. It would normally include the Wikimedia language code, name of the language, etc. Please complete at Wikidata if needed.
Directionality no indication Is the language written from left to right (LTR) or from right to left (RTL)?
Links Links to previous requests, or references to external websites or documents.

Settings
Project name ဝီႇၶီႇၽီးတီးယႃး "Wikipedia" in your language
Project namespace ဝီႇၶီႇၽီးတီးယႃး usually the same as the project name
Project talk namespace ဢုပ်ႇၵုမ် ဝီႇၶီႇၽီးတီးယႃး "Wikipedia talk" (the discussion namespace of the project namespace)
Enable uploads admin Default is "no". Preferably, files should be uploaded to Commons.
If you want, you can enable local file uploading, either by any user ("yes") or by administrators only ("admin").
Notes: (1) This setting can be changed afterwards. The setting can only be "yes" or "admin" at approval if the test creates an Exemption Doctrine Policy (EDP) first. (2) Files on Commons can be used on all Wikis. (3) Uploading fair-use images is not allowed on Commons (more info). (4) Localisation to your language may be insufficient on Commons.
Optional settings
Project logo File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-shn.svg This needs to be an SVG image (instructions for logo creation).
Default project timezone Asia/Yangon "Continent/City", e.g. "Europe/Brussels" or "America/Mexico City" (see list of valid timezones)
Additional namespaces For example, a Wikisource would need "Page", "Page talk", "Index", "Index talk", "Author", "Author talk".
Additional settings Anything else that should be set
submit Phabricator task. It will include everything automatically, except additional namespaces/settings. After creating the task, add a link to the comment.

Arguments in favour edit

  1. Support Support : Native speakers of Shan have the competency and willingness to contribute to this project in the long-term. Hence the Shan language deserves to be given the opportunity and priviledge to have its own language edition of Wikipedia along with the existing Tai-Kadai languages such as Thai and Lao. --Jose77 21:29, 22 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  2. Support Support : Shan Language had it's own stand for centuries. With enough articles and efforts, Shan Wikipedia is a must. Lionslayer 04:20, 1 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  3. Support Support : Shan wikipedia is very important for Shan speakers. Many Shans have been using wikipedias that usually are not in their native tongues such as Thai and Burmese. Now I believe it's time they had a wikipedia where they can fully understand its content, and contribute to their community.Alifshinobi 03:13, 3 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  14. Support Support : There are a number of different Tai / Shan groups; by having a common usage and online reference tool using the most basic and simple language of Tai (Tai long) script would help bring us all Tais / Shans into one and it's time to do so. With Wikipedia, Shan language will always be a part of the largest encycolpedia for all users to experience the wider and more multicultural world. Pluto p (talk) 04:36, 3 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
