Requests for new languages/Wikipedia Igala

submitted verification final decision

This proposal has been approved.
The Board of Trustees and language committee have deemed that there is sufficient grounds and community to create the new language project.

A committee member provided the following comment:

On hold until the test project starts on incubatorwiki. --Sotiale (talk) 05:49, 11 September 2022 (UTC) - Approved on 2024-04-02, phabricator:T361644 --MF-W 20:29, 2 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
  • The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
  • The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:
What Value Example / Explanation
Proposal
Language code igl (SILGlottolog) A valid ISO 639-1 or 639-3 language code, like "fr", "de", "nso", ...
Language name Igala Language name in English
Language name Igala Language name in your language. This will appear in the language list on Special:Preferences, in the interwiki sidebar on other wikis, ...
Language Wikidata item Q35513 - item has currently the following values: Item about the language at Wikidata. It would normally include the Wikimedia language code, name of the language, etc. Please complete at Wikidata if needed.
Directionality LTR Is the language written from left to right (LTR) or from right to left (RTL)?
Links Links to previous requests, or references to external websites or documents.

Settings
Project name Wikipídiya "Wikipedia" in your language
Project namespace Wikipídiya usually the same as the project name
Project talk namespace Úkóla Wikipídiya "Wikipedia talk" (the discussion namespace of the project namespace)
Enable uploads no Default is "no". Preferably, files should be uploaded to Commons.
If you want, you can enable local file uploading, either by any user ("yes") or by administrators only ("admin").
Notes: (1) This setting can be changed afterwards. The setting can only be "yes" or "admin" at approval if the test creates an Exemption Doctrine Policy (EDP) first. (2) Files on Commons can be used on all Wikis. (3) Uploading fair-use images is not allowed on Commons (more info). (4) Localisation to your language may be insufficient on Commons.
Optional settings
Project logo File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-igl.svg This needs to be an SVG image (instructions for logo creation).
Default project timezone Africa/Lagos "Continent/City", e.g. "Europe/Brussels" or "America/Mexico City" (see list of valid timezones)
Additional namespaces For example, a Wikisource would need "Page", "Page talk", "Index", "Index talk", "Author", "Author talk".
Additional settings Anything else that should be set
submit Phabricator task. It will include everything automatically, except additional namespaces/settings. After creating the task, add a link to the comment.

Proposal edit

They are over 2 million Igala speakers in Nigeria, The home of the Igala people is situated east of the river Niger and Benue confluence and astride the Niger in Lokoja, Kogi state of Nigeria. The area is approximately between latitude 6°30 and 8°40 north and longitude 6°30 and 7°40 east and covers an area of about 13,665 square kilometers (Oguagha P.A 1981) The Igala population is estimated at two million, they can also be found in Delta, Anambra and Edo States of Nigeria. The Igala language is closely related to the Yoruba and Itsekiri languages, the language is the seventh largest tribe in Nigeria.

The project will be based on creating high quality video recordings, audio recordings and lots of numerious edits and translation by various participant of the igala native speakers. On this basis, transcription, vocabulary, concordance and grammar in igala language will be developed.

Discussion edit

About the settings:

  • The logo needs to be in the SVG format.
  • The project namespace is supposed to be Wikipídiya, but the project talk namespace Úkóla Odúmádúma? Is this correct? Remember that it should be a translation of what is called "Wikipedia talk:" in English.
  • What is the additional namespace Odúmádúma kíbo for and what would its corresponding talk namespace be called?
  • And what is the setting "chétins kíbo" supposed to achieve?

Hello MF-W Apologies for the delayed response; I haven't been feeling too well lately. I've made adjustments. Could you please check if the logo is satisfactory now? Also, I'm sorry for any errors in my translations; I didn't follow the instructions properly. AgnesAbah (talk) 04:06, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
