A committee member provided the following comment:

See rule #3 under "Requisites for eligibility" in the Language proposal policy. LangCom believes that this is not a sufficiently different language; between Low German Wikipedia and Dutch Low Saxon Wikipedia this ground is sufficiently covered.   • The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
  • The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
  • The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:

Settings
Project name Wikipedy "Wikipedia" in your language
Project namespace usually the same as the project name
Project talk namespace "Wikipedia talk" (the discussion namespace of the project namespace)
Enable uploads no Default is "no". Preferably, files should be uploaded to Commons.
If you want, you can enable local file uploading, either by any user ("yes") or by administrators only ("admin").
Notes: (1) This setting can be changed afterwards. The setting can only be "yes" or "admin" at approval if the test creates an Exemption Doctrine Policy (EDP) first. (2) Files on Commons can be used on all Wikis. (3) Uploading fair-use images is not allowed on Commons (more info). (4) Localisation to your language may be insufficient on Commons.
Optional settings
Project logo This needs to be an SVG image (instructions for logo creation).
Default project timezone Europe/Emden "Continent/City", e.g. "Europe/Brussels" or "America/Mexico City" (see list of valid timezones)
Additional namespaces For example, a Wikisource would need "Page", "Page talk", "Index", "Index talk", "Author", "Author talk".
Additional settings Anything else that should be set
Once settings are finalized, a committee member will submit a Phabricator task requesting creation of the wiki. (This will include everything automatically, except the additional namespaces/settings.) After the task is created, it should be linked to in a comment under "final decision" above.

Aside from being the butt of regional jokes, it is a reletively distinct variety spoken on the german border with the netherlands, keeping close ties with neighboring Gronings, both of which have a frisian substratum and are unintilligable to other low german varieties. This language is slowly disapearing and strongly needs preservation.

  • Oppose. This is a bad idea indeed. East Frisian (in spite of its name) is a dialect of Low German, and we have a Low German Wikipedia. In fact, its native name is given above as Plattdüütsk. As always, one can hold lengthy discussion on what constitutes a dialect of a separate language. And yes, East Frisian does differ from other Low German varieties. I can very well understand how East Frisian speakers have trouble collaborating with speakers of Westphalian on the same website. But granting East Frisian its own Wikipedia, or indeed aknowledging this proposal as eligible, would spell the end of the Low German Wikipedia. It would have to be split up into various dialect wikis: East Frisian, Westphalian, Eastphalian, Sleswegian, Mecklenburgian... When you start a Wikipedia in a language without a standardised form, you will always have to cope with dialect differences. Valid point, the integrity of Low German Wikipedia is out of the question. My intention is to combine requests for East Frisian Low Saxon and Gronnings Wikipedia, considering they both belong to the same subgroup within the Low Saxon continuum and display similar Frisian characteristics, and form a unified standard, which would be the best. Both the Low German and nl-nds wikis alone cannot cover the broad scope of these two vernaculars. Eitanish 17:22, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
