  • Acehnese (also Achinese, Achehnese) or Aceh (formerly Atjeh) is a Malayo-Polynesian language spoken in Indonesia predominantly in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam Province. The speakers are about 4 million people.

Arguments in favour

  1. Support Support The majority speaker reside in Indonesia, minority speaker in Malaysia, so it will be good if we have it--Andri.h 04:30, 11 April 2008 (UTC)none[reply]
  2. Support Support Beside in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam Province, there are also many speakers in many other cities in Indonesia, such as in Medan, Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang, Yogyakarta, Surabaya and other cities and provinces. Also many other speakers in Malaysia and Scandinavian countries (Danmark, Sweden, Norwegian, and Finnland). Acehnese people in Scandinavian countries reach about 1000 people and many of them are intelectual people and care Acehnese language very much. I think many Acehnese people will support this idea. Basa Aceh 09:17, 12 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  3. Support Support Achehnese or Achinese is an important cultural language with long literary tradition, even predating the Islamic time. Aceh is now mostly known as an Islamic region. With the recent positive political development regarding regional autonomy there has been an increase use in regional awareness. in So it is a good thing for them to have Wikipedia in their own language. Meursault2004 18:12, 12 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  4. Support Support Same as Andri.h Azmi1995 forget to log in 05:55, 19 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  5. Support Support Same as Andri.h Mimihitam 06:53, 19 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  6. Support Support As an Achehnese, I know how important this project going to be. Achehnese or Basa Acheh has been spoken by its people for hundreds years. Dispite no standardised in written form but Achehnese has long been able to stay to be spoken in centuries. Achehnese NOT just being spoken in Aceh, Malaysia, Indonesia, Danmark, Sweden, Norwegian, and Finnland, but as well in some states of The United States and Canada. I strongly believe the referenced countries have fresh clean water, good sanitary systems, and for sure no argument in their best internet connections. Realizing this project will bring tremendeous support for Achehnese in all over the globe. Having this project in Wikimedia will add the richness and the uniqueness of Wikimedia itself. Soon, Aceh not just to be known as the 2004-tsunami epicenter, but also as part of The Wikimedia. For that, I conclude in favour of this project.--Krueng 16:02, 20 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  7. Support Support Long literary tradition, although oral tradition is kept more. A wikipedia in Acehnese will contribute greatly to the language and development of Acehnese culture in general. Kembangraps 11:43, 17 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  8. Support Support Same as Andri.h IVP 10:40, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  9. Support Weak oppose Hopefully it will work. Good luck! --Jeroen 02:35, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  10. Support Support The Acehnese will eventually rise to prestige, and so it is essential if a Wikipedia can be created in the language. As a speaker of a currently unknown dialect of Neapolitan, I feel that at least these languages with 10,000+ speakers should be give a chance. Giacomo DiBenedetto 23:03, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  11. Support Support Mikhailov Kusserow (talk) 09:01, 3 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  12. Support Support I Agree. TracySurya 06:23, 20 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  16. Support Support Same as Andre h. He made the best persuasive comment. Razorflame 06:26, 16 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  17. Support Support I Agree. Hugo.arg 12:49, 20 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  18. Support Support The language represents the nation and its culture. By joining in Acehnese Wikipedia, I am proud of my language and culture! thanks. scandreamer

Arguments against

  • Oppose Oppose 48% of Aceh people had no access to clean water in 2002, and a third of all Aceh households had no access to sanitation. 38% of Acehnese have no access to health facilities [1]. It would therefore be reasonable to conclude that the majoirty of the Aceh do not have access to the Computer, let alone the internet. Acehnese was only the "language of the village and family" (ie. only a spoken language with no standardised written form), eg. the 'Aceh language' could be written as Bahsa/Basa/Bate Acèh/Achèh [2]. Acehnese was used for prose, first by "the Dutch language purists in the 1930s, and more recently by some Aceh nationalist purists in the 1990s."[3]. --Philip J 23:16, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
As long as it is written, and as long as there are people who care for their language, there is no problem in having a project. A Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia it is not a political manifest. GerardM 09:17, 16 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
BTW, what does it have to do with a Wikimedia project? There exist enough project in 'poor languages' such as Haitian Creole, Linggala etc. For your information, many other Indonesian language Wikimedia projects were kickstarted from aboard. Furthermore I read few years ago after the Boxing Day Tsunami on December 26, 2004 that Banda Aceh will be one of the most advanced city in Indonesia with many hotspots everywhere. In the Indonesian language Wikipedia, we now have at least one very active contributor who is a resident of Aceh (this one). On the other hand, I do indeed share your concern about the standard language that will be used. In the past 125 years or so there were not much material published in Aceh and in the past 400 years, Acehnese people used Malay for official communication and after Indonesia's independence also Malay in guise of Indonesian. So the standard must be set and it is not the task of Wikipedia to set a new standard. Meursault2004 20:16, 20 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Bahsa/Basa/Bate Acèh/Achèh is only dialect variation, such as theater and theatre etc in English. There is standardised written form in Acehnese. Si Gam Acèh 14:48, 22 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You talk about 2002. today is 2008. You talk about 6 years ago Azmi1995 05:13, 1 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It is a big mistake, if you say that Acehnese was used for prose, first by "the Dutch language purists in the 1930s, and more recently by some Aceh nationalist purists in the 1990s! There is a famous book about Islam in Acehnese language in prose form. The name of the book is Beukeu Meunan. Mon Tasik 18:29, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Other discussion

My position is neutral, I'm an Indonesian, I understand the need to initiate a new project language and totally in support. I know Andri.h, as he has been contributing to wikipedia bahasa indonesia since, not sure, 2006? so as a standard knowledge to start something and to contribute continually he has it. Without being to political (hot blooded Indonesian - like me, easily arouse heheh), my personal knowledge that the Aceh local language is earth and moon with Indonesian language, at one time, volunteer for tsunami were asked : "can you speak acehnese language?" the one who did not stay behind - I stay behind in Medan. So I hope you got the picture, useless Indonesian language.
But my worry is this, I'm afraid there may not be enough contributors - or it is just my pessimist bone nagging. So I wouldn't know whether it is going to last... Mersault did a wonderful job initiate Wikipedia Bahasa Indonesia and Javanese in an "almost alone" format. Would they have the gut to do it? It is going to be a three party here? I believe?
I have translated MediaWiki Interface (most used) about 350 messages from all 491 messages. And in this month--if God permit--I will finish it. But I do not edit the hyperlink yet. After I finish translating it, I will edit the hyperlink. Si Gam Acèh 02:02, 11 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
