Applications for the conference scholarships are now closed. Accepted participants will be informed in February.

Who should apply?

This conference is open for all queer wikimedians and allies who believe in diversity and inclusivity, and open knowledge volunteers and academics working on LGBT+ topics.

We encourage the following people to apply:

• Queer Wikimedians and allies leading projects to engage the queer community or to enrich the queer Wikimedia projects content on a local scale.
• Wikimedians working on the language gap in Wikimedia projects related to gender topics. This includes diverse aspects such as health, human rights, education and politics.
• Wikimedians coming from the global south countries or where there is no local Wikimedia Affiliate available to support you.
• Librarians, LGBT+ activists, researchers, and thought leaders working on or creating open knowledge.
• If you think you fit the goals of this conference and not listed here? please do not hesitate to apply or email us.

Preparing your application

To ensure a strong application using the online form, you may wish to take some time to prepare answers to the main questions. These questions are:

• What Wikimedia projects you are mainly active on? e.g. Wikipedia, Wikidata, Commons...
• Brief description of your activities on Wikimedia projects, especially the ones related to LGBT+ topics (if any)
• Brief description of your activities related to LGBT+ topics outside Wikimedia (if any)
• Have you ever attended any international or regional Wikimedia gathering? If yes, can you list them?
• Do you intend to give a presentation or offer any other kind of activity? If yes, can you give a brief description? (structure, goal, and theme)
• What are your expectations in the Queering Wikipedia conference?
• How would you apply what you gained/learned from the conference?

What financial support are we offering?

We have different types of scholarships depending on the applicant's needs.

Scholarships can cover the following expenses:

• Transportation to and from Linz, Vienna (aiming to choose eco-friendly transportation to minimize the conference's carbon footprint)
• Visa fees
• Accommodation for the duration of the conference from the 21st to the 24th of May or the 25th, depending on the availability of return tickets
• Meals during the conference
• Welcome pack
• Access to planned parallel and social events

My data security

In order to ensure security of your data, access to the information you provide by filling this form will be restricted to the Wikimedia Austria staff who comply with a non-disclosure agreement and the scholarships committee members of the Queering Wikipedia Conference listed on the team page. No third party will have access to any of this information without your explicit agreement.

1. Who are the scholarships team?

2. What is a partial scholarship?

   Full scholarships cover travel, accommodation and local expenses for the 4 days of the conference. Partial scholarships may be requested to cover part or none of the travel costs, for example, you may wish to limit your claim for local train or flight connections if you are planning to take a holiday in Europe at the same time.

3. What does "cultural background and LGBT+ identity" mean?

   An aim of the conference is to represent a wide diversity in attendees by geographic cultures, genders and LGBT+ identification. It would help the conference organizers to know more about our participants to know whether we are reasonably representing the interests of people with a background in non-European or minority cultures and the views of as many LGBT+ and queer-identifying groups as possible. For example, if you grew up gay in Bolivia but now work in Norway, or when at home you speak Scottish Gaelic, your background would be great to add to your application.

4. Will I be able to get a scholarship when staying longer, like visiting relatives before flying back?

   Yes. There may be many reasons that travel to or from the conference might be deferred and these plans should be included in the application.

5. Can I stay anonymous and get a scholarship?

   Only the scholarships team and travel and financial administration within WMAT and the WMF will need to be provided with real-life identities to ensure funds are correctly used, but conference attendees are not required to attend using those details and may remain pseudonymous by using their Wikimedia account names and preferred pronouns. If being connected to an LGBT+ event may put you at legal risk, please email the scholarships team in confidence before making an application.
